What's new in the Library?
This month, we have a "Blind Date with a Book" display in the High School Library. Books on display are covered in brown paper, with a 'valentine heart' on the front cover with a quick synopsis of what the book may be about (without revealing character names or title). If the title sparks student's interest, they are encouraged to check it out and maybe read a book by an author they haven't heard of before, or in a different genre from their usual selections.
Save the Date for the Spring Book Fair!
Our Spring Scholastic Book Fair will be happening in the Library the week of May 5 - 9. This will be a Buy One, Get One Free Book Fair and is a great way to stock up on new books for summer reading (or early birthday/Christmas shopping). Stay tuned for more details in early April!
Library Happenings this Winter
Some of the other new books in our Library this fall/winter.
February birthday authors are also on display this month.
Library Skills activities with K-2
In December, we reviewed how books are organized on the shelves, and practiced organizing books (in the Fiction area) in ABC order by using the Shelver game on the SmartBoard. In January, students in Grades K-2 have been enjoying fairy tales and different re-tellings of famous fairy tales and have been comparing and contrasting them. We started with the story of Little Red Riding Hood and also read two other re-tellings, Little Red and Lon Po Po which were both very different. Fun fact --- the story of Lon Po Po or "Grandmother Wolf" came from China, and was first written down over 1,000 years ago!
Animal Slide Shows with Grade 3 - 4
Besides working on keyboarding skills in Library, students in Grades 3 - 4 have been learning how to work with Google Slides to create a simple slide presentation and use the formatting tools. Students were able to add slides, change the background color or layout, and insert pictures and text to create a slide show about a favorite animal or pet that they researched on either Pebble Go or World Book. There were a lot of great slide show creations made!
Grades 3-5 participated in the READ Bowl reading challenge.
During the four weeks leading up to Super Bowl Sunday, students in Grades 3-5 participated in the READ Bowl challenge sponsored by former NFL player Malcolm Mitchell's Share the Magic Foundation. This challenge grouped students into classroom teams, and they kept track of all minutes read in either the classroom or at home. There were over 800,000 students participating worldwide in this program.
Ms. Irish's Third Grade was recognized in the Top 100 Third Grade classes for their reading accomplishments during the second week of the READ Bowl. Fort Ann students read 213,880 minutes during the four weeks of the challenge, which is AMAZING!! According to the video sent out by Malcolm Mitchell on Super Bowl Sunday, all students are winners for opening up a book and reading, and for trying their best.
