Senior Highlight
Congratulations Alex! UT Austin Impact Scholarship Recipient
Over the past weekend, high school seniors from across the state received a virtual call like no other when representatives from the Office of Admissions surprised each of them with a $48,000 Impact Scholarship.
The Impact Scholarship program was created in 2017 with 32 recipients, and now in 2020, has more than doubled the number of awards granted. The scholarship program, which provides $12,000 per year to fund the cost of a UT Austin education, was created for students from across the state of Texas who are making an impact in their local communities. Only 6 scholarships were awarded in the El Paso and surrounding areas. EPISD had 2 awards, one from YWLA and one from Franklin High School. Alejandra "Alex" Gonzalez was surprised by UT Austin Recruiter Danielle Garcia, family, and the counselor staff during her StuCo membership meeting during lunch.

FSA ID Number - Who is considered a Parent?
We’re excited to remind you that the 2025-2026 FAFSA application will be available starting December 1, 2024! To complete the application, both students and parents will need to create an FSA ID, which is required to submit the FAFSA.
Now, who is considered a "parent" for FAFSA purposes? A parent is defined as a biological or adoptive parent, or a person legally recognized as a parent by the state (such as being listed on a birth certificate). Keep in mind that grandparents, foster parents, legal guardians, older siblings, and aunts or uncles are not considered parents on this form unless they have legally adopted the student.
Here are a few key points to remember:
- If your legal parents are living and married, you’ll need to provide information about both.
- If your legal parents are not married but live together, you’ll also include information about both.
- If your parents are divorced or separated, you’ll provide information about the parent you’ve lived with the most in the last 12 months.
- If your divorced or widowed parent has remarried, be sure to include your stepparent’s information as well.
We hope this clarifies things and helps you get ready for the FAFSA process! Please reach out if you have any questions—we’re here to help!
