Community Update
September 15, 2023
It was wonderful to see students settling into new routines, identifying goals, engaging in learning and meeting our upper elementary and high school parents/guardians at Meet the Teacher Nights during the second week of the 2023-24 scholastic year.
Our educators appreciate families being involved right from the start and look forward to the lower elementary Meet the Teacher Nights next week.
As we gear up for a new year of successes, I want to share with our community how North Rockland plans to take spotlighting student achievement a step further.
Through a variety of programs and traditions, we have always focused on recognizing the exemplary work of NR students. Honoring and supporting the things they do continues to be at the center of creating a positive school culture where students feel valued.
To expand on that, the District will be launching more opportunities, events and activities across every building for K-12 learners to get involved/showcase their strengths academically, impressive efforts and top notch character.
It’s important we celebrate the outstanding things that students accomplish, both inside and outside the classroom as well as in all content areas - including those categories that can sometimes go unnoticed. Whether it be a feature in a Principal's newsletter, a school lobby bulletin board or case photo display, shout out on the morning announcements or positive note/post card/phone call home, we are committed to maximizing the ways we can promote those good vibrations.
At the District level we will continue to share “Red Raiders in the Headlines” which broadcasts news articles on members of our student body, “Red Raiders of the Week” to highlight our athletes each season as well as now launching “Recognizing Red Raiders” to amplify individual accomplishments and “Remarkable Red Raiders” to share inspiring stories of superb alumni.
Spreading good news is going to be a NRCSD cornerstone as the year progresses. We’re excited and motivated to share all the amazing feats our students will accomplish!

NRCSD 9/11 Ceremony
In NR Patriot Day is an Occasion of Remembrance and Service.
Our NJROTC, Chorus, students, staff and leadership as well as local service members all gathered this morning for a beautiful, heartfelt 22nd anniversary community ceremony honoring those we lost on 9/11/2001 in North Rockland.
Wreaths Across America
Remember, Honor, Teach.
That is the motto of Wreaths Across America - Official Page, who visited Haverstraw Elementary this week. Their mission is to remember fallen U.S. Veterans, honor those who serve and teach our children the value of freedom, which is exactly what they did.
The day started with an amazing rendition of The National Anthem from sixth grader Anthony, followed by speeches from Superintendent of schools, Dr. Kris Felicello, Rockland County Executive Ed Day, Supervisor of Haverstraw Howard T. Phillips, Village of Haverstraw Mayor Michael Kohut and Principal Francisco Ovalles. Each one of them addressed the students from a place of passion and warmth to connect with the students while educating them about the importance of service and community. Full story.

Recognizing Red Raiders
Alex Carpenter is our First Red Raider Recognition of the Year!
Alex Carpenter is taking the next step on his journey to become an Eagle Scout, an accomplishment which only 6% of Scouts achieve. He will be beautifying his parish's parking lot. To help support him and offset the cost of the project, you can purchase an engraved brick (see form for more info). Alex is a shining example of the NR spirit. He has chose a project that will make his community a more beautiful place for those who utilize it. Future plans of his include Dine and Donates as well as a cans and bottles recycling effort. Thank you Alex for making us proud!

Causes
North Rockland is Going Gold 🎗️
September is National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.
The Gold Ribbon is the international awareness symbol of Childhood Cancer. The color gold represents how precious children are and the resiliency of childhood cancer heroes. The Pediatric Cancer Foundation hopes that going gold this month will help send a message to policymakers that pediatric cancer research deserves more funding than it currently receives. Right now, only 4% of federal funds are going toward pediatric cancer research.
Many of us in NR unfortunately have felt or dealt with the pain of this terrible illness. In their honor, we ask all our staff and students to wear gold to school Friday September 22 in an effort to raise awareness and demonstrate support for this worthy cause.

Raiders of the Week
Lady Raider of the Week
Caroline Tomas is our Lady Raider of the Week! Caroline is a senior captain of the NRHS Varsity Girls Soccer team. Number 10 has always been a massive asset to the program. For the first game of the 2023 season, Tomas scored 2 goals against New Rochelle leading to a 5-1 victory and in the NY Hall of Fame Tournament she scored a second half goal against Jamesville-DeWitt that led the team to a 2-0 win. Caroline Tomas has also been named Lohud’s 2023 Elite 11 which is a column Lohud does to highlight the top returning players of the season in Westchester, Rockland, and Putnam counties. At the end of last season, she was also named Second Team All County. Tomas will be attending the University of Albany where she committed to playing Division 1 soccer. Let’s make some #REDANDWHITE noise for Caroline!
Red Raider of the Week
Thomas Joachim is our Red Raider of the Week! Tommy is a freshman on the Junior Varsity Football team here at North Rockland High School. Number 9 has made an enormous impact on the team which can be difficult to do as an incoming freshman. The transition from middle school to high school can be a difficult one, especially when juggling academics and sports, but according to Tommy’s teachers, he is a respectful gentleman who has handled the change with ease. As a player, he embraces the program culture and displays leadership qualities through his play. Joachim was named the MVP of their Red-White Game Scrimmage where he made his impact on the field by making plays and following instructions intently. Even though he is a young player, his teammates often seek him out because of his great understanding of the concepts. He has been working out with the team all summer and it shows. This past week he had 3 sacks as a tight end and a number of tackles on defense as a linebacker and even played on special teams. Let’s make some #REDANDWHITE noise for Tommy!
.Home Opener with the 1977 North Rockland Football Team
Last Friday night, under the lights at the Haverstraw Complex, the halftime show was a special one. This year is the 45th anniversary of the mighty 1977 North Rockland Football Team. This powerhouse team outscored their opponents 226 to 59. Their defense was also stellar, recording three shoutouts and only allowing nine touchdowns all season. The season ended with a thriller, where they beat Clarkstown North to win the RCPSAL Championship. The team consisted of six players with 1st Team All-County honors, five players in the NR Sports Hall of Fame, and many others with All-County and All-State honors. The coaching staff was legendary, with Ralph Cordisco as the head coach and the assistants were Pete Warner and current AD Joe Casarella.
The players were honored and also got to look back at a video that included highlights, pictures and newspaper clippings from that year. It was a great opportunity for the previous generations of Raiders to pass on the torch to our rising coaching regime and players. The Raiders beat Mamaroneck that night to start the season 2-0.
