Does Your Child Have a Growth Mindset?
Has your child or teen become less motivated with school or activities? Or do you feel they give up on challenges and see making mistakes as ‘failures’? Fortunately, we can support our children through this by helping to develop a growth mindset. A growth mindset is having the belief that we can actually improve our intelligence and strengthen our skills by putting in effort, facing challenges and being open to learning from mistakes.
The most effective praise we can give our children is praise that is concrete and focuses on their effort, strategy, or improvement.
This might sound like:
“You worked so hard!”
“That seemed tough but you really stuck with it!”
“Hmm. How can we learn from this?”
Model with your own behaviour by saying “Wow, this is really challenging. I’m going to have to practice more!”
If we praise children for their efforts and hard work, instead of the end result, we can show them while they may not be perfect at something, or know something YET, they will improve if they keep working at it. Having this mindset can be a big motivator for your child and give them that extra confidence boost they need as they navigate growing up!
