We greatly appreciate your active role in your child's education. Today, I'd like to emphasize the significance of daily school attendance. Learning is our top priority, but without your child in regular school attendance, it is challenging for them to engage in learning.

So far this school year, we've recorded 806 full-day absences, which is an increase from the 703 absences we had at this time last year. While we understand that illnesses have been circulating, I want to encourage you to prioritize daily attendance whenever possible.

I also want to remind you that school starts at 7:30 am. This year, we've had 510 students arrive late, which is a 6% improvement compared to last year. Still, it's important to stress that learning happens from the moment the bell rings at the start of class, so please encourage your child to arrive promptly, even early. Our cafeteria opens for hot breakfast as early as 7am!

Wednesday, October 4th is our Fall count day. This is the day we report to the State of Michigan how many students are educated on a daily basis. It is crucial that ALL students are in attendance on this day. If for any unforeseen reason your child is unable to be present this day, please call in to our attendance line 616-252-2070, or bring in a doctor's note excusing them.

The approaching homecoming game this Friday promises excitement, and it's important that we maintain high standards of behavior. Together, let's ensure this homecoming game becomes truly memorable through our exemplary conduct!

October is college awareness month! Did you know that college refers to any education after high school that results in a credential or other degree? There are so many options out there for you! The skills that you learn and practice here at Godwin Middle School will be the jumping off points for your future. Continue to make learning a priority!

Next week, all students and staff are encouraged to wear college colors from around the state of Michigan. The week will look as follows:

• Monday (10/2): wear gear or colors that are black, blue, and white (Go GVSU Lakers!)
• Tuesday (10/3): wear gear or colors from some famous MAC teams - green (Eastern), maroon/gold (Central), brown/gold (Western)
• Wednesday (10/4): wear maize (yellow) and blue (Go U of M Wolverines!)
• Thursday (10/5): wear green and white (Go MSU Spartans!)
• Friday (10/6): Wear your personal favorite from around the state of Michigan!

Attention all students! Picture retakes are scheduled for Monday, October 2nd. If you missed our orientation before the school year started or purchased pictures and want a retake, here's your chance. If you're getting a retake, please remember to bring your old photo packet with you. These photos are vital for our yearbook and your IDs. Expect your IDs to be distributed within the following week or two. Don't miss out on this opportunity to capture your best look! 📸

What is the Parent Focus Group?

The Parent Focus Group is designed fore parents of students in grades 6-12 to come together to talk and share thoughts with other parents and school administrators. Your opinions are important because they help make our school better.

This group will assemble once a semester with the first session occurring Thursday, October 5th, from 6:00 PM – 7:00 PM at the High School Collaboration Center. In this meeting, we'll discuss the Parent Compact and look at some data comparing last year to this year.

Your participation matters. Together, we can work towards making our school community even better.

Attention Student Athletes! MS Fall Athletics Pictures are scheduled for Wednesday, October 11, 2023. Here's the lineup:

• 1:30 PM: Cross Country/Football at the Football Field
• 2:20 PM: Soccer at the Soccer Field
• 3:00 PM: Volleyball in the HS Gym

Make sure you're geared up and ready to capture those athletic moments. See you there!

GET-IT Girls, a grant-funded club, is launching Tuesday, October 10th! It will be held Tuesdays after school until 4pm. In the first part, we'll dive into the world of website design, and the second part will be all about robotics. Click here to sign up! 🚀💻🤖
