Hoops for Hunger
Behavior Expectations
The Hoops for Hunger event is scheduled for January 22nd this year. The purpose of this event is to raise money for the Greater Lansing Food Bank and to have fun at a CMU Women’s basketball game. It is very important that students demonstrate their ability to follow expectations while at school so that we can trust that they will follow the expectations at the game. With that being said, students will only be allowed to attend this event if they have three or fewer behavior referrals from Monday, December 2nd through January 21st. Everyone has a clean slate starting this week, so it is up to our students to make sure they are following all school expectations from now until the event in January. I believe that all of our students have the ability to do this!
Hats for Hoops
On Tuesday, December 10th, students may bring in a dollar to go towards our Hoops for Hunger donation and wear a hat to school. Any student who donates a dollar will be entered into a drawing to become a Hoops for Hunger VIP! The VIP experience includes choosing a friend to ride in a school van to the game, stopping for a drink and a snack, and other special privileges throughout the day! Students can choose to bring a dollar on Tuesday to be entered into the drawing even if they don’t want to wear a hat. All money raised will go toward our donation to the Greater Lansing Food Bank.
Second Step
What are we learning this week?
5th Grade - Unit 3: Empathy & Kindness
Lesson 15: Your Solution -In this lesson, your child will choose a solution to a problem in their school community and explain how it meets the wants and needs of the people who are affected by the problem.
Try this at home: Point out a change that has happened in your neighborhood recently that was intended to solve a problem. Ask your child if that change was a good solution, and how they know.
6th Grade - Bullying/Harassment Unit
Lesson 2: Recognizing Bullying - This week’s lesson will help your child understand the difference between bullying and joking around, and that joking can escalate and become bullying. Helping students understand when joking becomes bullying can reduce negative impacts on others.
Try this at home: Tell your child about a time you witnessed or experienced bullying. Describe how this made you feel and ask your child what they might have felt.
7th Grade - Bullying/Harassment Unit
Lesson 2 - What is Sexual Harassment? -In this week’s lesson, your child will learn how to recognize the difference between sexual harassment and flirting so they can make informed decisions about how to respond.
Try this at home: Remind your child that it's important that they tell you if they experience sexual harassment. If you feel comfortable doing so, share an example of sexual harassment you or another person has experienced and how you or the other person dealt with it.
8th Grade - Bullying/Harassment Unit
Lesson 2 - Social Factors that Contribute to Bullying - In this week’s lesson, your child will consider other people’s attitudes and beliefs about bullying and harassment, as well as their own.
Try this at home: Share your thoughts and feelings around bullying and harassment with your child. Find out where you and your child agree and disagree and have a respectful discussion.
Youth Sports
For any questions related to youth sports, please contact the appropriate sports program directly. Don’t call the school as our staff is unable to answer specific questions about your child’s team, schedule, or registration status. Instead, reach out to the sports organization for the most up-to-date information!
If you’re not sure who to contact, check out this page on our website that provides contact information for many of the local youth sports organizations in the Chippewa Hills area.
