Principal's Message
Here we are, in the middle of May! I hope you are all staying well, and looking forward to living more normal lives in the future as more people become vaccinated and COVID exposures are reduced. Even though the CDC recommendations are changing for COVID precaution, Oregon’s governor provided a statement in which she said, "Nothing is changing for schools this school year, and I expect education staff and students to continue to wear masks and physically distance, as outlined in our Ready Schools, Safe Learners guidance." The District has already informed our community of this, and I just want to reiterate for you that we will be adhering to this guidance at ISB. Thank you for your ongoing support and cooperation in helping us all remain as safe as possible.
Graduation activities continue to be planned as I outlined in last week’s message. We are so looking forward to being able to see your graduates and families in person. I will be sending out a senior letter this week with more details for the event and for the end of the year for seniors.
I want to also make sure you remember the change in the schedule for the week following Memorial Day. This is a four-day week so there is no Wednesday Advisory/Asynchronous schedule. This affects both in-person and CDL students.
- Monday, May 31: Memorial Day Holiday, Schools Closed
- Tuesday, June 1: Attendance Group 1, A Day
- Wednesday, June 2: Attendance Group 2, B Day
- Thursday, June 3: Attendance Group 1, B Day
- Friday, June 4: Attendance Group 2, A Day
Your support means the world to your children and to the ISB staff. Thanks for all you do as parents, families, and community members.
Take care.
Sincerely,
Janice Adams

Oregon Students Still Have Time to Apply for the Oregon Promise Grant
The deadlines are June 1 for high school seniors and July 12 for GED® test graduates
The Higher Education Coordinating Commission’s Office of Student Access and Completion (OSAC ) encourages Oregon’s graduating high school seniors and GED® test graduates to apply for the Oregon Promise by the upcoming deadlines, even if they are still deciding on their college plans this fall. The Oregon Promise Grant is a state-funded grant for recent high school graduates and GED® test graduates to pay for tuition at Oregon’s 17 community colleges. Every student gets only one opportunity to apply for the grant, which is during their senior year or immediately after completing their GED®.
With the effects of the pandemic, many students and families are facing uncertainty related to their postsecondary education and training plans. Oregon Promise application numbers are currently lower than they were for prior graduating classes, and OSAC is working to ensure that every eligible student is aware of the upcoming deadlines. Students who are graduating from high school or receiving their GED® between March 1, 2021 and June 30, 2021 can still apply. High school graduates have until Tuesday, June 1 to apply and GED® test graduates have until Monday, July 12 to apply. The application process has two steps:
- Submit the Oregon Promise Grant Application and
- Submit the 2021-22 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or Oregon Student Aid Application (ORSAA).
Applying for the grant does not bind a student to attending a particular college; they will only be asked to accept the award with their college if/when they enroll.
Juan Baez-Arevalo, Director of OSAC, says, “We hope that every student completing high school or the GED® applies for financial aid—starting with completing the FAFSA or the ORSAA and grant applications like the Oregon Promise—even if they are still considering their postsecondary education and training plans. Meeting the deadlines is critically important so students don’t miss out on grants and scholarships that could open doors for them.”
Last week, OSAC began awarding Oregon Promise grants for Class of 2021 students who have already submitted their application, but OSAC is still seeking additional applications from students who may begin community college this upcoming fall term.
The Oregon Promise Grant is now in its 6th year of awarding, established by the Oregon Legislature in 2015 to begin awarding funds to the Class of 2016. More information about the eligibility and awarding criteria of the Oregon Promise Grant, along with the application link, can be found online at www.OregonPromise.org. Schools, colleges, and partner organizations are encouraged to share this information with students and families.
Student Testing Reminders
If your student has registered to participate in OSAS (Oregon Statewide Assessment System) at ISB, here are a few reminders about testing dates and grade level/subjects, times, scores, and transportation:
Testing Date: May 19
8th Grade - ELA & Math
11th Grade - ELA & Math
Testing Date: May 26
6th Grade - ELA & Math
11th Grade - Science
Testing Date: June 9
8th Grade - Science
- Testing will begin at 11:30 am and conclude no later than 2:30 pm. If your student finishes before then, you are welcome to pick them up early.
- There will not be make-up tests this year. Students will need to finish their tests within the allotted time, there won't be extended or extra time.
- Because this year’s test has a sizable content reduction, individual student reports will not include detailed sub-scores, but will be limited to an overall score. We expect results to be published in ParentVUE in August.
- Testing will take place at ISB in the cafeteria.
- Lunch will NOT be provided, but granola bars and water will be available for students who need a snack break, or students can bring a snack from home.
- Transportation has been routed only for students who submitted a request via the online survey by the April 30 deadline.
- Routes and pick up/drop off times can be viewed in E-Link using your student’s 6 digit student ID number and birthdate in the mmddyyyy format.
- All health and safety protocols will be observed including mandatory mask wearing, social distancing, and hand sanitizing.
- On the day of testing, please ensure that students come to school well-rested and eat a healthy breakfast, bring fully charged Chromebooks with chargers, and headphones/earbuds.
If you have questions or concerns, please email our testing coordinator at lele_wang@beaverton.k12.or.us, or call our main office at 503-356-3690.
