Information About Vacations in November and December
Here is some important information about upcoming school breaks. Many of these break details can be found on p. 64 of the Student Handbook. Some student-athletes will depart campus at the beginning of the break with their teams; in those instances, departure plans should be coordinated with coaches. Approximately two weeks before the start of each break, a Vacation Travel Plans form will be available for all boarding students to complete.
Thanksgiving break officially begins on Friday, November 22 at 7:00 a.m. (07:00) with the departure of the shuttle bus to the Albany International Airport and Albany Rensselaer Train Station. Students with no athletic commitments at the start of break may depart on Thursday, November 21, following their final academic and co-curricular obligations, which should be around 2:00 p.m. (14:00). Similarly, the Holiday break formally begins on Thursday, December 19 at 7:00 a.m. (07:00), but some students may depart on Thursday, December 18.
Please note that we have classes on Thursday, November 21 [and Wednesday, December 18], and there will be instruction on that day. Students sometimes ask their parents to leave early, telling them that "nobody will be in class on the last day" or "teachers aren't doing anything that day." That is not the case.
Northwood School’s campus will be closed from Friday, November 22 [Thursday, December 19] until Monday, December 2 [Monday, January 6]. Students will not be permitted to remain on campus during the break.
Shuttle Bus to Albany
To reserve a spot on the charter bus at the beginning and/or end of the breaks, please select the bus under Departure Transport and/or Return Transport on the vacation travel form.
The charter bus departs Northwood at 7:00 a.m. (07:00) on Friday, November 22 [Thursday, December 19] and is expected to arrive at Albany Airport at 10:00 a.m. and Albany Rensselaer Train Station at 10:30 a.m. Arrival times are not guaranteed and depend on weather and traffic conditions. Families should plan connecting transportation accordingly. Northwood charges student accounts only the shuttle bus cost, so the amount families will pay depends on how many students take the shuttle: the more students on the shuttle, the lower the cost. The average charge for the shuttle to Albany in recent years was approximately $75 one way.
Returning to Lake Placid, a bus will pick students up on Monday, December 2 [Monday, January 6] from Albany Rensselaer Train Station at 8:00 p.m. (20:00) and from the Albany International Airport at 8:30 p.m. (20:30). When choosing flights, please ensure your child can be on time to meet the bus. Returning families: please note that we no longer transport students to and from New York City. Amtrak provides connecting service to/from NYC Penn Station and Newark and Albany Rensselaer Train Station.
Returning after Break
Monday, December 2 [Monday, January 6] is return day. Boarding students not taking the charter bus are expected to return to campus between noon and 7:00 p.m. (19:00) Classes and co-curriculars resume on Tuesday morning, December 3 [Tuesday, January 7].
Questions? Email John Spear.
Photos of the Week
The Integrated Humanities 1 class visited the Six Nations Iroquois Cultural Center on Indigenous Peoples Day. The Fadden family opened the center in the summer of 1954 to educate the public about Haudenosaunee culture and Native American history in general.
