Principal Nolan's Notes
October 2, 2024
Hello, Whip-Pur Families!
Our Walk-a-Thon was a huge success for our students and staff! Thank you to our amazing HSO team for their hard work to plan and organize this event for HES. The weather was perfect and students worked hard to walk, skip, or run laps in honor of the generous amount of donations given by the Hampshire community. The top donors in each grade level were able to use the "Splash Tank" to soak teachers and staff including Mrs. Bolander, Mrs. Elliott, Mr. Hart, Mrs. Mertogul, Mr. Rahn, and Mrs. Rohde. Ask your child more questions about this fun event.
Awesome Attendance
Did you know we have 125 students that have not missed one single day of school yet! WOW! While 'perfect attendance' is a lofty and possibly unattainable goal as illness and unforeseen circumstances require us all to miss a day of school at times, we also want to celebrate our students that show up each day! Way to go, Whip-Purs!
Thank you for your efforts in ensuring that your child(ren) are present at school each day. It's never too early to teach that critical life skill to keep 'showing up' and giving your best, even on the days we wake up tired.
Our Attendance team has worked incredibly hard to create incentives and other strategies that help to decrease chronic absenteeism at HES. One of our School Improvement goals is to continue to reduce the number of students that are chronically absent as we know how profound the impact of attendance is to academic and social success. We are all well aware that students who attend school regularly have been shown to achieve at higher levels and create more positive peer relationships than students who do not have regular attendance.
IAR/Access Score Reports
Students in grades 3-5 will be coming home with their most recent IAR and (if applicable) ACCESS testing results tomorrow. IAR is the Illinois Assessment of Readiness, a statewide test administered to all students. ACCESS is also a statewide test, administered to English Language Learner students, to understand their progress towards English proficiency.
It is very important that your student brings this report to you. Please take a moment to review the report with your student as the results of the assessment will provide information about his/her growth and learning. Parent involvement and support play a significant role in student success. Likewise, access to their child's results can enhance the ability of parents to communicate with their child's educators.
Parent information regarding the IAR test can be found here, including directions to access the IAR Parent Portal. A guide to understanding your students' ACCESS scores can also be found here.
Dundee Township Halloween Party
The Rotary Club of Dundee Township will be hosting its annual Halloween Party for children with special needs on Sunday, 10/20 at the Dundee Township Park District Senior Center. This is a free event for families. Please click HERE for more information.
Halloween at HES
Halloween will be here before we know it! HES will continue the tradition of participating in a school community parade to celebrate. On Thursday, 10/31 our parade will kick off at 9:15 AM beginning with KG classes, followed by 1st grade, 2nd grade, etc…and our 5th Grade leaders will exit the front doors last.
Classroom parties will follow later in the day at differing times, dependent on each grade level's lunch/recess schedule. Please use the link below to learn more important information regarding Halloween festivities at HES.
Pumpkin Decorating Contest
The HES Library will be hosting the 3rd annual pumpkin decorating contest! Our Media Specialist, Mrs. Enders, has provided all the information that you need HERE. The theme of the pumpkin decorating contest is to decorate a pumpkin like a book character! Important timelines include:
- Entries should be brought to the Resource Center between 10/23-10/31.
- Students and staff will vote from 11/1-11/8.
- Winners will be announced on 11/13.
- Pumpkins should be taken home by 11/15.
Change of transportation home?
If your child's end-of-day transportation needs to change, we are happy to help! Because the office is a very busy place as dismissal time nears, please call the office as early in the day as possible to inform us of the change in order for us to provide your child's teacher the information in time. This will help ensure that your child gets to the correct pick up location (bus, Zone 1, Zone 2, or AfterCare) and understands the need for the change.
Thank you for your help!
