THE CHES "PUP POST"
FAMILY NEWSLETTER: OCTOBER 24, 2022
THIRD GRADE TESTING
Students will take the first part of the assessment on Tuesday, October 25, from 9:00-10:30 AM. They will take part two on Wednesday, October 26, from 9:00-10:30 AM.
Please keep a few things in mind if you have a third-grader at home:
- Students need a good night's sleep and a healthy breakfast to be at the top of their game and show what they know!
- Students statistically perform better when they are here when their classmates take the test. Please try to avoid appointments on these two mornings if at all possible.
- They will be using their Chromebooks for the assessments. Please make sure they bring a fully-charged Chromebook!
- If students finish early, they will need a book to read. They are not permitted to go onto other websites during the test.
- Please encourage your child to do his or her best. Tell them to take their time and read everything. Ask them to check their answers. We want them to know that this is serious, but we do not want to "threaten" them with failing third grade.
- Please try to be ON TIME for school. Students who start their days off with a tardy are often shaken and upset for a little while. Let's try to avoid that.
Thank you for your assistance! Please do not hesitate to call or email your child's teacher or Mrs. Houchen if you have questions.

COSTUME FALL FUN/COSTUMES AND PARADES:
- Thursday, October 27: Students in PK are encouraged to wear Fall Fun clothing and/or costumes to school. (They do not have school on Friday, October 28) They will hold a mini-parade in the school, and the PK teachers will share the plans for viewing the parade with all PK families.
- Friday, October 28: Students in K-5 are encouraged to wear Fall Fun clothing and/or costumes to school. Weather permitting, we will have a parade around the football field/track at 9:30 AM. since this is an early release day. (K-5 students are dismissed between 12:15 and 12:30 PM. Bus riders will arrive home approximately 3 to 3 1/2 hours earlier than usual.)
COSTUME GUIDELINES:
We appreciate your cooperation in helping us make this a fun day for everyone by following the guidelines below. We do not want to have uncomfortable conversations with students or parents. Let's keep it fun!
SAFETY FIRST
This is during the school day, so they will need to go up and down stairs. They will need to go down a hill or stadium stairs for the parade. Some things you may not have thought about...
- SHOES - Please ensure that your child wears safe shoes that meet the Dress Code requirements. (No heels, slippers, flip-flops, etc.)
- MASKS - Costume masks are not permitted to keep vision clear at all times.
- WEATHER APPROPRIATE - Look at the forecast to ensure that your child will be warm enough for an outdoor parade. Remind them that a coat over a costume is perfectly fine if needed.
KEEP IT SIMPLE
Although it is an early-release day, students will still need to be able to go to the restroom, sit in classes, and eat lunch. Some things you may not have thought about...
- CLOTHING - If you choose to have your child wear regular clothes or Fall Fun clothing (t-shirts, headbands, etc.), you do not need to worry about any of the following guidelines.
- COSTUMES - Please have your child wear the costume OVER regular clothing. Students often want to take off their costumes before the end of the day. We cannot have children changing complete outfits during the day.
- ACCESSORIES - One of the biggest issues we have had over the years is that students leave costume pieces at school or accidentally take the wrong accessories home and do not have them for other weekend activities. Keep costume accessories at home to avoid this issue.
- MAKEUP - Avoid makeup as much as possible. Students rub their eyes and faces throughout the day and often end up with no makeup on by the parade time and/or spend time in the clinic due to allergies or eye wash needs.
ELEMENTARY APPROPRIATE
It is important to remember that we have children at CHES as young as three years old. We also have students with various needs based on trauma, disability, fears, and/or experiences. Please make sure any costumes worn are elementary-appropriate. Keep the other costumes for Trick or Treating. Some things you may not have thought about...
- SCARY CHARACTERS - Evil villains, characters from horror films, and those who are associated with violence should be avoided.
- BLOOD AND GORE - Blood and gore are not acceptable at school.
- WEAPONS - Weapons, including fake or look-alike weapons, violate the code of conduct. Please keep them at home.
- DRESS CODE VIOLATIONS - Clothing that violates the dress code, including clothing that is too revealing, is inappropriate, even for costume day.
K-5 PARADE VISITORS' INFORMATION:
- This parade will only be held if the weather is nice enough to take students outside and around the track. We will try to send a Remind and/or Final Forms notification if the weather forecast does not look promising.
- The parade will begin at 9:30 AM, and visitors are invited to watch the parade from the football stands. Students will enter the stadium and make at least one pass in front of the stands for photo opportunities.
- Parking will be available in the grassy area behind the football field's end zone and on area streets as signage permits.
*If you wish to park in the area behind the football field's end zone, please enter through the high school parking lot entrance. Beginning at 9:00 AM, staff will be there to help direct traffic and park vehicles. (Please do not arrive before 9:00 AM so we can get all students and staff safely into the buildings for the start of the day.)
*If you wish to park on area streets, please follow village signage for parking guidelines.
PTO SPONSORED TRUNK OR TREAT:
