Sakai Flamenco Assembly
By Ben Sacchetti & Brandon Caldwell
This week we had an assembly with the group Sakai Flamenco. The word Sakai means eyes. We learned about the origin of flamenco dancing. It originated in India. Then the people had to leave because of a war. Some of them traveled through Asia and Europe. The other half traveled through the Middle East and Africa. Aspects of these cultures influenced the dance along the way. They arrived in Spain and incorporated aspects of Spanish culture into the dance like singing and clothes. When the Spanish people immigrated to North America they brought flamenco dance with them. After Sakai Flamenco taught us about the history of flamenco, they taught us how to flamenco dance. There were 3 dancers, 1 guitarist and 1 singer. They also used a percussion instrument on their hands during the dancing. They had fans and sombreros. The dancing was interactive because they brought students and teachers up with them to teach them the dance. Our favorite part was when the teachers went up to dance. We are glad that Sakai Flamenco came to our school. It was a cool assembly and it was fun to learn about flamenco dance!
