Dear Parents & Staff

In last week’s newsletter I spoke of the three Pillars of Lent: Prayer, Fasting and Almsgiving. Today our focus is on Prayer. In his Lenten Message for 2021, Pope Francis says that we must engage in:

Thus, it is important that we do not lose sight of the power of prayer and the effect that it can have on our lives. It is up to us, both parents and staff to provide the opportunities for both ourselves and the children to engage in authentic relationship with God through prayer. Let’s try to make time in our busy lives to allow this to happen.

CLASS MASS

Throughout this year the children from Years 3 to 6 will be joining the parishioners in the Church for the celebration of weekday Mass. The first of these Masses will be next Wednesday with the Year Four classes attending at 8.45am. Parents are most welcome to join us.

ASSEMBLY

Our Year 4M children will present our first performance Assembly for the year next Friday, 5 March. We will be following the same format as was in place at the end of 2020 with the class performing, their buddy class and parents (two per child) attending in the Multi-Purpose Hall. All other children will have the performance live streamed to their classroom.

COURTS

We have been advised that the works for the re-surfacing of the Courts will not be completed until mid-March. This is disappointing as we have been waiting for considerable time for contractors to complete each component of the upgrade. The result will, however, be spectacular and I am sure the long wait will be forgotten when the works are finally completed.

OSHC

The fobs to allow entry to the school grounds during OSHC operating times have now been issued to parents and appear to be working well. Please contact Sharmane Dowse in the school office if you have any queries regarding the fobs or enrolment in the OSHC sessions for either before and after school or vacation care.

P&F MARKET NIGHT

Unfortunately, due to the lockdown restrictions at the start of the school year it was not possible to hold this very popular community event. As things have improved dramatically since this time, we are now holding the Market Night on Friday 26 March to celebrate our first term together. Please put the date in your calendar now!

REMINDER

There is no school tomorrow for the children as the staff will be engaging in Professional Development presented by the Dyslexia Speld Foundation. I hope all families enjoy the opportunity to have an extra long weekend due to the Staff Day and the Labour Day public holiday on Monday.

Congratulations to all students who participated in their Commitment Mass during last weekend as they prepare for the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Thank you to teachers and parents for your work in preparing and supporting the students for this Sacrament.

Anniversary Celebration

Last Sunday, I joined other invited guests to attend the 50th Anniversary celebration of Catholic Education Western Australia at the Perth Convention Centre. It was a wonderful opportunity to view the interesting displays and speak with former and current employees of Catholic Education Western Australia. This year, Catholic Education Western Australia is celebrating 50 years since the Bishops of Western Australia brought together Catholic schools across their four Dioceses into one State-wide system with the establishment of the Catholic Education Commission of Western Australia. The 50th anniversary is celebrated alongside the 200th anniversary of Catholic education in Australia.

Today, Catholic education in Western Australia has grown to 163 Catholic schools educating 77 000 students and employing 11 000 teachers and staff. An amazing achievement.

Stations of the Cross

This event will occur each Friday evening during Lent, commencing at 6.00 pm at Notre Dame Catholic Church. All are invited to attend.

Lenten Reflection

Reflection will occur from Tuesday 23 February until Tuesday 23 March 2021, commencing at 6.00 pm in the Parish Centre.

RCIA

This event is held each Tuesday evening, commencing at 7.00 pm in the Parish Centre.

World Wide Marriage Encounter Weekend

This event will be held at Corpus Christi College in Bateman during 20 – 21 March 2021. WWME Coordinators will be in the Parish this weekend, 27 – 28 February 2021 to speak with Parishioners about the Encounter Weekend. World Day of Prayer

This event will be held on Friday 5 March 2021 at St Barnabas Anglican Church, Orrong Road, Rivervale, commencing at 10.00am. Refreshments to follow prayers. This is a wonderful opportunity for all denominations to gather together in prayer and song. The focus this year is the people of Vanuata.

Altar Servers

Altar Servers play a very visible part in Parish liturgy. For the young person, their time of altar service plays an important part in their personal spiritual growth. The Altar Servers’ special ministry is to serve in the sanctuary in areas pertaining to the altar and lectern. They assist with the smooth flow of the liturgical rite, enhancing the spirit of worship and prayer.

In July 1992, Pope John Paul II confirmed a Vatican clarification that the 1986 Code of Cannon Law #230 allows both males and females of any age to assist at serving Mass.

Year 6 Camp

Sensation trail

On Thursday we had to go blind folded and follow a rope course through tyres. People had to guide us in a bean bag game with specific directions. I learnt to trust what people are saying and I realised that not being able to see is actually harder than I thought it was. I also learnt to always communicate and be confident.

Brig Amity

On Tuesday 16 February the Year sixes were at camp and we visited the Brig Amity.

When we were on our way to get on the Brig Amity ship, we were so excited until we realised, we had to be chained up. We got to explore the Brig Amity. We saw the beds where the convict slept; it didn’t look very comfortable. We also saw where the food was kept. We also got to try the foods that they ate (beef jerky and bread). They tasted good but I wouldn’t like to eat it every day I was on the ship.

ANZAC Centre

On Tuesday the Year 6s went to the National Anzac Centre in Albany. We were given an audio pod to listen to their wonderful stories. The audio pod had a special card used to listen to their biography. We each got someone to listen to their stories before finding a little bit about the other soldiers. We got to explore the museum. It had everybody from generals to nurses. We were very excited because we had the opportunity and all the kids enjoyed it very much. We were so thankful that the soldiers fought for us.

Archery

On Thursday I went to archery. I was in Middleton Marauders. It was so fun. Also, I went to the Wind Farm and also did the bush activity. If you ask me, the archery was the best of them all. The archery is when you get an arrow, and you try to shoot it. Archery was really hard when lots of people are like talking and cheering but it’s also very supportive.

Thursday Activities

Thursday, 4 days into camp, was tiring and a lot of fun. I mean the wind farm was very windy and cool. The view was amazing. We did a fun rope activity. We completed a course blindfolded that was hard but with teamwork we did it quite quick. Archery wasn’t as easy as you think but it was fun. The bush activity with Mr Winsor was great. He handed us some rope and a tarp, and we made a little shelter. They were cool. Time for my favourite, the sandcastle building. My group made a moat and a small island aka SpongeBob Island. Camp was the best.

Library News!

All students (K-6) have an allocated library time, please encourage your child to remember to return their library books on that day. All students MUST have a library bag to borrow. Library bags can be purchased from the uniform shop. Students with overdue books are not allowed to borrow until their books are returned.

Lunchtime @ the Library

The library is open Monday to Friday every week of the school term. It is also open at lunchtimes (except Wednesday) for students to read or play games such as lego, connect four, twister, chess, guess who?, snakes and ladders and uno.

Did you know that a second hand uniform page, which is hosted and managed by Notre Dame CPS parents, operates on Facebook? This is a great place for you to buy and sell quality second hand uniforms. The active site is available to all members of the community who access Facebook. You can also access second hand uniforms at the school's uniform shop.

School Banking is held every Thursday from 8.00am in the library.

School banking, other than teaching your child to save, is a great fundraiser for the school. Our school receives a regular savers’ contribution of $5 for every 10 deposits placed by your child.

Open an account with the Commonwealth Bank either online or in the bank and then your child can bring the deposit book to me in the library every Thursday morning between 8.00am and 8.30am. They will receive a token for every deposit and after 10 tokens will receive a gold token and are able to choose a prize.

Cloverdale Dental Clinic is open from 8am – 4pm Monday to Friday.

Cloverdale Dental Clinic is a free service and cater for school age children/teens from Kindy & Pre-Primary from the year they turn 5 to the end of year 11 or their 17th Birthday, whichever occurs first.

We are a Bachelor of Oral Health Final year placement clinic during university semesters. An experienced tutor oversees all check-ups and procedures.

It is not compulsory to enrol with the School Dental Service, if your children are having regular dental check-ups and treatment with their private family dentist, consider withdrawing from the school service. This will enable us to service those that are unable to access private dentistry. If circumstances change, you are welcome to re-enrol at any time.

If your address has changed/changes, please call us, as we send appointments to your home address, we also require current mobile phone numbers to send out text message reminders.

If your child has a toothache, please phone us on 9479 7222 between 8am-4pm, if you have an emergency outside of work hours, please contact your family dentist or the Emergency Service on 1800 098 818.
