Safety Week 2024
Dear District 70 Families:
Friday, Sept. 20 will mark the last day of our inaugural D70 Safety Week.
During the school day, students will view a short video featuring our district School Resource Officer Michael Camilo. Officer Camilo will share tips about transportation safety, specifically bicycle, crosswalk, and railroad safety. Please review the transportation safety video below.
The goal of this week has been to raise awareness about school safety among our students, parents, staff, and community members. During any crisis, it is important for our district stakeholders to work together and we hope the information shared this week helps facilitate that collaboration.
One additional safety tip for families:
- Be SMART - Firearm Safety at Home
Research shows that secure firearm storage practices are associated with up to an 85% reduction in the risk of self-inflicted and unintentional firearm injuries among children and teens. Additionally, three-fourths of school shooters acquired their guns from the home of their parents or close relatives. Storing firearms securely and separately from ammunition protects children in homes and the community. Be SMART helps parents and other adults normalize conversations surrounding gun safety and take responsible actions that can prevent gun deaths and injuries.
Be SMART
- SECURE all guns in homes and vehicles;
- MODEL responsible behavior around guns;
- ASK about the presence of unsecured guns in other homes;
- RECOGNIZE the role of guns in suicides;
- TELL your peers to be smart.
