Kay's Creek Connection
Weeks of February 10 & 17 Parent Edition
Kay's Creek Updates
KC Families,
It was an eventful week (when is it not?) at Kay's Creek. We want to thank our MANY parent volunteers who help every day in so many ways and especially those who took care of our Spelling Bee and Medieval Feast this week. Kay's Creek has one of the highest volunteer rates in DSD, and it is because YOU are all INCREDIBLY generous with your time, talents, and donations. We are so grateful for your service, whether great or small, it ALL makes a difference for your kids. Thank you!
We look forward to seeing you at parent/teacher conferences this week. Students and teachers have been busily preparing their data to share with you. If you missed the opportunity to sign up on myDSD, please contact your child's teacher and schedule a time with them.
As a reminder, please DO NOT bring in "special valentines" for your individual students or have students bring "special valentines" for specific students/crushes. 💞 We strive to keep things simple and as undistracting as possible. If students bring valentines to share with classmates, they need to have one for every class member. Thanks for your understanding.
Wishing you all a wonderful week!

Counselor's Corner
Hello Kay's Creek. Former Surgeon General Vivek Murthy said the following about empathy, "empathy is choosing to see ourselves in another despite our differences. It's recognizing that the same humanity - the same desire for meaning, fulfillment and security - exists in each of us, even if it's expressed uniquely." I do believe people are more alike than we are different and the need for empathy will always be in great demand. We each have a tremendous opportunity to model for our children and students' what empathy looks like. One way we can do this is in the form of self-compassion. As caregivers and educators, we often hold ourselves to high standards, feeling like we must have all the answers. Teaching self-compassion to children reminds us to practice it in our own lives. By modeling self-kindness—whether it’s forgiving ourselves for mistakes, taking breaks when needed, or speaking to ourselves with encouragement—we create a powerful example for children to follow. This week we can practice self-compassion and empathy through this exercise from Dr. Jamil Zaki PhD of Stanford, "think about something you're struggling with and how it makes you feel. Now imagine a friend coming to you with the same problem, how would you respond to that friend? Would you have more patience, compassion, and kindness for your friend than you would for yourself?" Dr. Zaki says that "empathy has to start at home." When we increase our capacity for self-compassion, we'll increase our capacity for empathy.

Medieval Feast
Our sixth graders had an incredible time stepping back in time to the medieval era! 🏰✨ From knights in shining armor to elegant ladies in waiting, everyone dressed the part and brought history to life. The feast was filled with delicious medieval-inspired dishes, lively music, and fun activities like jousting . 🥖🍗🎶🏹
A huge shoutout to all the students, teachers, and parents who made this event a roaring success! 🙌👏 Your creativity and enthusiasm truly made the day unforgettable. 📜💫

Yearbook Info
At the end of the year we always have many families who thought they had purchased a yearbook, but hadn't done so. If you would like to purchase a yearbook for your student please log onto your myDSD account and verify that you have purchased one. If you have already done so, it will say item previously purchased in yellow. If it does not show the yellow text then you have not purchased a Kay's Creek yearbook for your student.
With the change in the weather, now is the time to order a Kay's Creek Every1 hoodie or crew neck sweatshirt!

Policies & Procedures
- Dress Code - Updates coming
- Birthdays are recognized at school by classroom teachers, Principal Bukey, and the PTA. We will not be allowing treats to be brought in from home for student birthdays. This is for the safety of the many students we have with special dietary needs. Instead, we invite you to purchase a book in your child's name for the school library. More information here. Thank you for your understanding.
- Toys should not be brought to school unless a teacher gives permission for a specific purpose. Resin miniatures, such as the little ducks that are so popular, fit under this policy.
- The 2024-25 Belonging & Safe Schools Presentation has been presented to all 1st-6th grade students, with the exception of a few students who were absent. We invite parents of kinder students to view it and determine how you would like to share it with your child.
- Cell phones and smart watches must be kept in students' backpacks, powered down, and not used during school hours for communication. However, if a child needs to contact a parent, they are always able to use a school phone, with teacher permission. Students who require use of either one for a medical or 504 plan are an exception.
- Parents sometimes bring a special lunch in for their child. We ask that the lunches are kept to single servings so that students are not sharing outside food with tablemates.
