Back-to-School Night Information
This year's back-to-school night will be held on Tuesday, September 24, 2024, from 7:00 - 8:30 PM. The schedule is as follows:
- Welcome Presentations in the Jaguar Jungle (7:00 - 7:30 PM)
- Classroom Presentations Session 1 (7:35 - 8:00 PM)
- Classroom Presentations Session 2 (8:05 - 8:30 PM)
In an effort to accommodate families with multiple children, teachers will hold two twenty-five-minute sessions. Parents can attend either session 1 or session 2 as the information shared will be the same in both sessions. We kindly ask that children not attend this informative parent evening program. The Jaguar Jungle doors will open at 6:45 PM and parents/guardians are encouraged to visit the tables for various organizations that support our schools - PTO, MEF, MMA, SEPAG, Madison Public Library, and more.
The purpose of the evening is to visit the school to meet your child's teachers, see your child's classroom, secure information about the instructional program planned for your child for this school year, review policies and procedures, establish communication, and provide an opportunity to respond to general questions. Your child's learning experience is paramount, however, please be reminded that back-to-school night is not designed to discuss specific concerns regarding your child. We kindly ask that you contact your child's teacher or school counselor if you have specific concerns to discuss. Please note that classroom teachers will be scheduling individual parent-teacher conferences in November.
The TJS faculty and staff look forward to meeting you, partnering with you, and sharing in an exciting school year ahead!

Ms. D'Amico is truly an expert in the area of Technology and Engineering Education and should feel proud of this tremendous honor! Ms. D'Amico will be accepting this award at the NJTEEA Annual Conference in November.
Dear Parents/Guardians:
Welcome back to the new school year! It has been wonderful meeting your children and attending to their health needs over the last couple of weeks. Please see below for important health office reminders:
Immunization and PE Forms: Thank you to all new student parents and guardians for your cooperation with providing the required health documentation for your child to begin school at TJS. For any outstanding forms, I will be reaching out directly. 5th Grade Parents/Guardians: Two additional immunizations (Tdap and Meningococcal) are required by NJ law for all children when they turn 11 in order to attend 6th grade. The required form will be posted regularly in the weekly newsletter. Please see attached.
Medications: Any medication that is needed for your child during the school day must be brought into school directly by the parent/guardian with a signed and stamped prescription from your healthcare provider. This includes vitamins, supplements. Please use this link for required asthma and allergy paperwork https://www.madisonpublicschools.org/o/tjs/documents/health-office/allergy-and-asthma-required-forms/452347.
Snacks: Please provide your child with a peanut/tree nut-free snack and re-fillable water bottle daily.
Extra Clothes: Please provide an extra set of clothes for your child to keep in their cubby or backpack at school in case of toileting accidents, cafeteria spills, or falls.
Absences/Tardiness: Please report absences/tardiness to the TJS roll call line at (973) 593-3182 (#1) and leave a detailed message with your child’s name, teacher, and reason for absence or late arrival. Please try to report absences prior to the beginning of the school day at 8:40 AM.You may also email me directly at guarinoc@madisonnjps.org and copy Mrs. Dakss in the front office at dakssm@madisonnjps.org.
Illness: If your child is home sick, they must be fever free for 24 hours before returning to school (without the use of fever-reducing medication),and symptom free for 24 hours if they have experienced vomiting or diarrhea. If a student has a fever, testing is recommended for both Covid-19 and Flu. Please report any positive results to the health office and call me to discuss returning to school (Covid-19 school exclusion is now treated the same as other respiratory illnesses and students must be fever-free for 24 hours with an improvement of symptoms). As with any significant virus or infection, please provide a doctor’s note for clearance, especially for extended illness (3 or more days).
As always, please feel free to reach out to me at any time with questions or concerns. I look forward to a safe and healthy new school year!
Kindest Regards,
Carrie Guarino, RN

News from Mrs. Bletcher in the Counseling Corner
School-wide, classroom counseling lessons are taking place this week and next. This first lesson of the year focuses on understanding the differences between bullying versus conflict. Students in grades 3-5 also learn about the four types of bullying: physical, cyber, relational and bias-based. Students across grade levels are given a variety of situations and have to choose whether they are examples of conflict or bullying. Each example is open for classroom discussion. In all K-5 lessons, I am utilizing Trudy Ludwig’s, My Secret Bully as an anchor text to help students better understand relational bullying. Please check out the book cover below and materials that will be coming home with your child here.
Attention parents of 5th graders! Mrs. Niper and I are looking for students who are willing and able to join our 5th Grade Peer Leadership Team. Meetings will be held after school on Tuesdays from 3:15-4:00, once or twice per month. This opportunity is open to all 5th grade students and is FREE to join. We highly encourage all 5th graders to sign-up using the following link. This week, Mrs. Niper spoke to all 5th graders about this fun and exciting leadership opportunity. Please feel free to reach out to either of us with any questions at bletcherj@madisonnjps.org and/or niperm@madisonnjps.org.
As always, if you have any social/emotional concerns or questions regarding your child, please reach out to me at bletcherj@madisonnjps.org.

News from PE Teacher, Mr. Gerenstein
Dear Parents/Guardians:
This is "Mr. G", with a quick update on what is happening in physical education class. First, the school year has started off amazingly with all the classes working hard, playing safe, and having fun. Besides getting in the usual PE routines, grades K, 1, and 2 are currently focused on spatial awareness and moving safely in class. We are doing this "driving" on our PE roads and playing a TJS favorite, Switch on the four square courts.
Our older students, grades 3, 4, and 5, who mostly have our routines already, are learning striking by playing Foursquare. Both Foursquare and Switch are great activities that can be done at recess as well, another reason why we learn them early.
Besides these activities, we have had a lot of fun playing some cool down activities like The Floor is Lava and the very silly Spaghetti and Meatballs.
As a reminder, please have your child wear sneakers on their PE days. We move a lot in class and I want to do my best to ensure they move safely and efficiently in PE. Thank you so much!
