Autumn Term - 5th October 2023
Message from the Head of School
Dear Parents/Carers
This week I have had the pleasure of visiting all the classes to monitor the behaviour for learning across the school. I am pleased to report that throughout I saw a calm, focused and highly productive environment where the children were keen to learn. The staff have worked incredibly hard to ensure that all pupils have settled in quickly and I am pleased to see so much excellent teaching and learning.
Today, I met with the class reps to discuss key topics within the school. It was an overwhelmingly positive discussion, with many highlighting the strengths of the school and its staff. I also appreciate the points for improvement that were raised and we will look to review and make changes where possible. As always, we value your input in making the school the best it can be.
Thank you to all those families that have purchased something from the Amazon Wishlist. The gifts are gratefully received and have been quickly distributed to classes. As a reminder, please ensure that a gift receipt is added to the order with your child's name or class as this makes it easier to distribute. The list will remain open and will be reviewed again in the Spring term.
Finally, thank you to all those who 'had a good clear out' of clothing at home in aid of supporting our Rags2Riches collection. As a school we registered 423.2kg of clothing - which raised an impressive £211.60!
I hope you and your family have a lovely (sunny) weekend.
Mr J James

World Mental Health Day – ‘What’s on your mind?’
World Mental Health Day is celebrated on 10th October. The theme for 2023, set by the World Foundation of Mental Health, is ‘Mental health is a universal human right’.
World Mental Health Day is about raising awareness of mental health and driving positive change for everyone’s mental health. It’s also a chance to talk about mental health, how we need to look after it, and how important it is to get help if you are struggling.
You may have already seen ITV’s advert for its ‘Britain Get Talking’ campaign, which encourages parents and carers to ask the question, ‘What’s on your mind?’ and have open conversations with their children.
At HJS, we promote the importance of looking after and talking about our mental health and wellbeing through PSHE lessons and Growth Mindset activities. We have ‘worry boxes’ in all classrooms to give children the opportunity to let an adult know if they have a worry they would like to talk about. We also regularly remind the children of all the different adults we have around the school who are there to help them if they have a problem.
As a school, we will be celebrating ‘Children’s Mental Health Week’ (run by the children’s mental health charity, Place2Be) in February. In the meantime, please take this opportunity to speak to your child about their mental health and ask the question, ‘What’s on your mind?’

Year 5 News
Four pupils from Year 5 represented Hampton Junior School at Hampton School's annual event of the Maths Wizard Competition. The aim of the competition is to enable enthusiastic mathematicians from local primary schools to come together and tackle a range of fun and challenging mathematical problems. The focus of the morning was on teamwork and having fun while giving pupils the opportunity to develop their mathematical problem solving skills.
Year 6 News
Miss Bell and 6GB really excelled in the their Art this week. Thank you to the parents for providing all the cardboard! They have each made their cardboard relief print in the shape of an eye- which links to Queen Victoria’s interest in eye miniatures and the work of Sir William Charles Ross. We will be printing next week and look forward to sharing our results.
6B created some beautiful independent prints on polystyrene tiles during art this week
6L used everyday objects to create colourful prints in Art this week.
Scholastic Book Fair
The dates will be: Wednesday 1st November, Thursday 2nd November and Friday 3rd November in the Rose Hall, after school between 3:20pm and 4:00pm.
As part of this, we have been given 5 x £5 book vouchers to give away. We are launching a "Design a Bookmark" competition in order to decide who to award these vouchers to. There will be one winner for each year group plus one bonus winner (this could be from any year group!)
If you would like to receive a £5 book voucher to spend at the book fair in school, you can enter the competition by doing the following:
- Design a bookmark the same size as the templates provided
- Use colour pencils or colour pens
- Create an eye-catching design
- Show a passion for reading- they could represent a certain author, book, genre or present a reading-related quote
Here are some examples, as well as a bookmark template to use.
