School News (NEW)
This morning we had a flooded pipe in kindergarten which caused us to have to move Allye's class to other spaces for the day. The plumbers came out and are working on unclogging the pipe and hopefully restoring the kinder bathroom for use. We appreciate the flexibility of our littlest humans as they happily moved to let the problem be fixed. Thanks all!
In field study news: Carrie's class went to Haystack Rock, Mary Lloyd visited Orenco Station, Becca's class toured Beacon Village, Mary Gage and Sarah took their classes to Steigerwald Lake National Wildlife Refuge in Washougal, WA and Monica's class went to the Multnomah County Courthouse. Field studies are a vital component of our program and as the year ends, we will continue to plan for how to continue and honor this important part of our program going forward into next year.
Today after school we are going to celebrate Sunnyside Rose Day. All day students have been drawing roses and many families brought roses in to display. After school our middle schoolers continue to raise money by selling rose themed lemonade and cookies and additional other goodies.
Many of our staff members and students have been sporting our new Sunnyside gear. This has been available for purchase during our fundraisers and events. Please consider purchasing any of these treats to help support our middle school field studies and trips.
Thanks for all you do. Looking forward to our last two weeks together.

Sunnystock is back!!!
June 7, 2024
2-4 pm
What? It's one of the oldest and coolest traditions, and we are bringing it back! This community gathering is a way to celebrate art and people in all of their lovely forms while focusing on sustainability. Expect drumming, breakdancing, live musical performances by students, garden tours, bottle drop stations, silkscreening of t-shirts...and a fundraising sale of lavender-infused lemonade, SES t-shirts, cookies, ice cream from Dairy Hill, and SO MUCH MORE!
Who? Sunnyside students from all grades are invited to join this celebratory event! Parents/home adults are invited to join, and we ask that you stay out on the blacktop and not enter the SES building to minimize traffic in our already-busy office! This is being hosted by SES students, our Students of Color group, alumni & Sunnyside staff!
Where? Out on the blacktop and field of SES campus
Help needed from 6th & 7th grade families: 2024 8th Grade Promotion (NEW)
True to the great sense of community that Sunnyside has fostered over the many years our children attend school together, it's a tradition that 6th and 7th grade families come together to create a loving 8th Grade Promotion ceremony. Our collaboration is a gift to the 8th graders whose accomplishments and contributions are numerous to our community, their families, and our school. It is a pay it forward gift that we will receive when our children celebrate their promotion.
The 2024 Sunnyside 8th Grade Promotion is Thursday, June 13 from 6-8 pm in the Franklin High School auditorium (on the corner of SE 52nd and SE Woodward). Our job is to coordinate the festivities beforehand and help in both the set up and clean/tear down the day of the event so the 8th graders and their families can relax and celebrate. We ask that ALL 6th & 7th grade families help make this a memorable occasion for our 8th graders and their families.
Please sign up to make this a great event as we send off our 8th graders!
Last Middle School Dance of the Year (help needed)! (NEW)
Our final middle school dance of the year is Friday, June 14th 6-8 pm. To make it happen, we will need chaperones and snacks! Sign up here to chaperone or bring snacks. (Chaperones must have active volunteer background checks.)
The dance starts promptly at 6:00 and ends at 8:00—please make sure students have plans to arrive and leave at these times. Permission slips will come home next week. We request a $5 donation to cover the cost of the dance, but no child will be turned away for lack of funds.
Ice Cream Bike Bus - After School on June 12
Sunnyside is teaming up with other neighborhood schools (Glencoe, Richmond, Abernathy, and Creston) for a big fun end-of-year after-school bike ride to 50 Licks on SE Clinton St. on Wednesday, June 12! We will meet at the portables after school, and head out after middle school dismissal at 3:15.
Parents/guardians are invited and encouraged to join, but kids who are confident riders are welcome to join without their grownups (with parent permission- please email Alida if your kid will be joining without a grownup). We will treat every kid to a scoop of ice cream (no need to send money, though donations to PTSA are always appreciated!). Grownups should plan to either join the ride, pick up kids directly from 50 Licks if not joining, or have a plan for kids to ride home with another adult. Contact Alida (alidacantor@gmail.com or on Konstella) if you can help.
Dine Out for SES: Straight From NY Pizza on Belmont - June 4
Sunnyside, it's Pizza Time! On Tuesday, June 4th, our amazing long-time supporter and neighbor, Straight from New York Pizza on Belmont, will donate 20% of sales to SES! Come out, grab some pies, and invite your friends to hang on the back patio for an end-of-school-year dinner!
Radio Club
Interested in giving kids independence and freedom to roam the neighborhood, and also giving them a way to stay in touch without cell phones? Hand held radios -- essentially high-powered walkie-talkies with a range of a mile or more – are a fun and simple solution! 2nd grade parent Travis Pritchard has been learning about hand held radios and has developed a guide for families who are interested in learning more.
Interested & want to connect or learn more? Maybe play with radios over the summer? No experience needed. Reach out to Travis (trpritchard@gmail.com) and/or join the new “Radio Club” social group on Konstella.
8th grade speeches have begun
Each year as our SES 8th graders prepare to leave for high school, they must complete a portfolio of assignments designed to help them think both retrospectively, prospectively and introspectively. One of those assignments is a speech that talks about something they believe.
On Tuesdays and Fridays during middle school morning meeting, 8th graders are delivering these speeches, starting at 8:45am.
You can find the schedule of speeches here. The schedule does change, so please be sure to check for updates regularly if there's someone you really want to see. (Note: No one is allowed to exit or enter the auditorium when a speech is in progress; please show up on time.)
