Brandywine School District Students Excel in Junior Achievement Work-Based Learning Activities
The board of directors of Junior Achievement of Delaware announced today the recipients of the JA 20 Under 20 awards, including four Brandywine School District students.
JA 20 Under 20 recognizes high-achieving Presidents of student-run enterprises operating in Delaware High Schools via the JA Company Program® and other accomplished participants in JA Learning Experiences spanning Kindergarten to young adulthood. Honorees win gift cards and vie for scholarships.
Lombardy Elementary School fifth grade student Kate DiSibio, who served as the Mayor of JA BizTown® says JA BizTown, “allowed me to continue to develop my leadership skills,” and to “set a good example.”
JA BizTown preparatory curriculum provides 5th or 6th grade students the opportunity to review “want ads” and apply for jobs which they take on during a Capstone simulation where they become adults for a day. This combined experience is being positioned as an introduction to Work-Based Learning and the career programs of study available in local High Schools.
Three Concord High School students are honored with JA 20 Under 20 awards for their leadership and participation in teacher Shana DiFrancesco’s student-run enterprises as part of the JA Company Program®.
Concord High JA 20 Under 20 honorees are Dan Baxter, Alyssa McDonnell, and Raima Suha.

Jack Donnelly's Outdoor Library Dream Becomes a Reality at Lombardy Elementary School
At Lombardy Elementary School, the students are not just learning from their textbooks—they’re learning about initiative, community, and the power of a good idea. Jack Donnelly, a fourth grader with a knack for problem-solving, is proving that sometimes all it takes is a bit of enthusiasm and a willingness to pitch in to turn a dream into a reality.
It all started a few weeks ago when Jack was visiting the office of the school principal, Mr. McDermott. As he waited, his attention was drawn to an unusual item sitting quietly in the corner of the office—a stack of materials for an outdoor library. Intrigued, Jack couldn’t help but ask the principal about it. Mr. McDermott explained that the library was meant to be installed outside for students to enjoy during their recess or downtime, but they were still waiting for a contractor to install it.
Jack, with his characteristic sense of humor and initiative, jokingly remarked, “Are you ever going to put that library outside?” But Mr. McDermott wasn’t joking when he replied, “I’m waiting for a contractor to install it.” That’s when Jack, always ready to take action, said something that would set things in motion: “You don’t need a contractor, I can install it for you!”
Intrigued by Jack’s confidence, Mr. McDermott didn’t dismiss the idea immediately. He decided to check in with Jack’s teacher, Ms. Dill, to get a sense of Jack’s abilities. When asked about Jack’s skills, Ms. Dill was quick to confirm that her student was indeed quite handy. In fact, she mentioned that Jack had a good eye for projects and could handle small tasks around the school.
Then, Ms. Dill had a lightbulb moment. Her father, Mr. Dill, was an expert in construction, with all the tools and experience needed to bring the outdoor library to life. Ms. Dill spoke with her father, and after a little planning and preparation, it was set. Jack and Mr. Dill would team up to install the library, turning Jack’s idea into something tangible.
Earlier this week, the duo got to work. Armed with tools and determination, Jack and Mr. Dill dug the hole, poured concrete, and began assembling the structure. It was a hands-on experience for Jack, who not only helped with the physical labor but also learned valuable lessons in construction and teamwork.
The outdoor library is now officially in place, offering students a cozy spot to grab a book and read in the fresh air. It’s not just a new addition to the school grounds—it’s a symbol of what can happen when you combine initiative, creativity, and community spirit.
Thanks to Jack’s determination and Ms. Dill’s support, the students of Lombardy Elementary have a new outdoor library to enjoy—and a story about how a fourth grader turned a simple idea into a meaningful contribution to the school community.
For Jack, this experience has sparked a new interest in construction, and who knows? Maybe one day he’ll be designing and building even bigger projects. For now, though, he’s content knowing that his hands-on work has made a lasting impact on his school.
Kindergarten Spa Day Brings Smiles and Style to Lombardy Elementary School
Lombardy Elementary School’s annual Kindergarten Spa Day was a heartwarming success once again this year, as young students welcomed a special someone to join them for a day of pampering and fun. The event, a beloved tradition at the school, gave kindergartners the chance to treat their guests to mini makeovers, including nail painting, hair styling, and a bit of playful face decorating.
Classrooms were transformed into cozy spas, complete with soothing music and colorful decorations, as students proudly took on the roles of stylists and beauty experts. Laughter and smiles filled the room as children painted nails with care, combed hair into fun styles, and added a touch of sparkle to their guests’ faces.
For many students, the best part of the day wasn’t just the glitter or the polish—it was spending quality time with someone special, whether it was a parent, grandparent, sibling, or a fifth grade buddy.
Spa Day continues to be a memorable celebration of connection, creativity, and confidence, leaving both students and guests glowing inside and out.

Your child will learn how to read a middle school rotating schedule, learn what the BARK expectations (Be Respectful, Act Safely, Reach for Excellence, and Kind actions) look like in various situations, meet current Springer staff, operate locks and lockers, participate in team building and social skill training, navigate the building, etc. Springer hopes to see your student there, but if you cannot make one of the two sessions, please contact a member of the Springer administration to schedule a tour of the building during the Summer before school starts.
Please see the attached flyer for more information and do not hesitate contact Springer Middle School with any questions or concerns."
