What We're Reading: VPL Book Chats
If you're a sucker for novels written in a series of letters, then this historical fiction novel is for you! A young writer, Juliet Ashton, finds her next book subject through her love of books! I was smitten, to write the least.
"As Juliet and her new correspondent exchange letters, Juliet is drawn into the world of this man and his friends—and what a wonderfully eccentric world it is. The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society—born as a spur-of-the-moment alibi when its members were discovered breaking curfew by the Germans occupying their island—boasts a charming, funny, deeply human cast of characters, from pig farmers to phrenologists, literature lovers all.
Juliet begins a remarkable correspondence with the society's members, learning about their island, their taste in books, and the impact the recent German occupation has had on their lives. Captivated by their stories, she sets sail for Guernsey, and what she finds will change her forever.
Written with warmth and humor as a series of letters, this novel is a celebration of the written word in all its guises and of finding connection in the most surprising ways." ~Goodreads.com (4.19 rating) Happy reading, friends! #librarylife #librarylovers
VPL Note: The Caraval series is available in eBook and Audiobook in Libby, and physical copies will soon be available at our library.
The Caraval series by Stephanie Garber is based around two sisters, Tella and Scarlett. Scarlett has always wanted to see the magical Caraval and on her birthday Tella makes her dream come true. Both sisters get whisked away into the Caraval’s numerous mysteries and performances. Scarlett is kidnapped to be part of the show and now Tella has to find her sister in five days before the Game is over. The series revolves around a dark mystery, the two sisters' love for each other, and finding true love. Here's what other readers are saying about the series:
“At the very beginning, this book had me hooked. The mystery of the game, the man, the myth, the legend behind it. A mysterious sailor, the crazy sister who wanted more from life, and the quiet heroine who wanted her own life.” – Cece Rants, reviewer from GoodReads.com
“Scarlett's love for her sister was great to see. I also think that the backstory was set up surprisingly well.” – Meredith Scott, reviewer from GoodReads.com
