Spotlight on the CHS Empire Mock Trial Team
The Empire Mock Trial Team went to the World Championship last week in Chicago, Illinois! This year’s team was led by senior captains Ayush Ghosh and Joseph Kim and junior captains Shalisa Ibad and Jada Jackson, and consisted of 15 lawyers, witnesses, and a bailiff who competed in four rounds of competition against teams from Tennessee, Florida, Texas, and even Ireland!
Meet the Prosecution:
- Lawyers: Rob Donovan, Alice Han, Yehji Hwang, and Joseph Kim (captain)
- Witnesses: Sam Arreaza, Leia Kim, and Ana Lagos
Meet the Defense:
- Lawyers: Ayush Ghosh (captain), Emily Han, Shalisa Ibad (junior captain), and Jada Jackson (junior captain)
- Witnesses: Aleena Idrees, Sandy Jayaprakash, and James Li
- Ellie Namkoong
Overall, the team earned several top attorney and witness round nominations and won several ballots over the other teams. During their time there, the team also completed a community service project to help the homeless community in downtown Chicago, attended the play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, and toured the Art Institute of Chicago.
Our mock trial team will now turn its attention to the in-state competition, with those matches happening in the winter. Mock on, Eagles!
Student Leadership Meeting
On November 13, the Howard County Association of Student Councils (HCASC) facilitated a leadership meeting at the Board of Education. Three CHS student leaders, Ernest Macharia, Jenny Min, and Daisy Navarro, as well as Angela Huang, CHS member of the HCASC Officer Team, represented our school.
Student leaders met with Superintendent William Barnes and members of the Board of Education to participate in discussions regarding topics chosen by students on issues related to HCPSS and their school community:
- What aspects of your school journey have shaped you?
- What are the best and worst parts of your daily school experience?
- What are the dream experiences for students and schools?
- How can we make more our schools more supportive of students?

Amazing Food Lab Hosted by CHS KAPA!
Many thanks to Ms. Rosemarie Ha, CHS Multilingual Achievement Liaison, and the CHS Korean American Parents Association (KAPA) for organizing and presenting an amazing food lab for students in Food/Nutrition Tech and Culinary Sciences classes.
Parent volunteers showed our students how to make kimbap, also known as gimbap, a Korean dish prepared with cooked rice, dried seaweed sheets, and a variety of fillings such as marinated vegetables, fried egg, ground meat, and fish cake. The volunteers also showcased a spicy Ramen.
Our students were engaged in the preparation, asked lots of questions, and enjoyed the delicious and healthy dishes.
Ms. Liang Wins President's Volunteer Service Silver Award
Ms. Hui Liang, CHS World Languages Chinese teacher, received the President’s Volunteer Service Silver Award for the period from August 2003 to August 2024. This marks her third consecutive year receiving this honor, reflecting over 1,000 hours of volunteer service contributed to communities nationwide. Ms. Liang's volunteering centers on developing and implementing events and activities, training sessions, and competitions for the National Chinese School Association.
The President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation founded the President’s Volunteer Service Award in 2003, to recognize the important role of volunteers in America’s strength and national identity. This award honors individuals whose service positively impacts communities in every corner of the nation and inspires those around them to take action, too. The PVSA has continued under each administration, honoring the volunteers who are using their time and talents to solve some of the toughest challenges facing our nation.
Bearwell!
For those that have come to know Bear over the past year, we are both happy and sad to announce that Thursday was his last day here at Centennial High School!
Bear is a future service dog for the Guiding Eyes for the Blind organization. He has been with CHS English teacher, Mr. Wheeler, for more than a year preparing for his important work as a guide dog. Bear will be finishing his skill-specific training in Yorktown Heights, New York, before ultimately being matched with a visually impaired person that could use Bear for assistance in their day to day lives. We wish Bear all the best as he continues to make a difference in the world!

HCPSS Career Readiness Advisors Need Your Help!
The HCPSS Career Readiness Advisors (CRAs) are excited for the 2024-2025 school year, and we would love your help!
Last year, CRAs implemented a Monthly Career Cluster Spotlight series across the county. The Monthly Spotlights allowed students to explore a wide scope of careers while connecting those careers to both the HCPSS curriculum and student strengths and interests.
Each month, we spotlight a different career industry/cluster. We provide students with information about career cluster pathways, curricular connections to that pathway, and opportunities for students to engage with professionals in those clusters.
Here is where you come in: we are looking for community members to share your experience, advice, and insight in your professional line of work.
Please fill out the following form if you are interested in donating a bit of your time and wisdom to HCPSS students.
Thank you!
