Leader In Me Program
What is Leader in Me?
Founded on the belief that everyone has the potential to lead, Leader in Me is a comprehensive framework that nurtures student leadership, fosters a culture of trust, and boosts academic success. This proven approach empowers students, educators, and families with essential leadership and life skills, preparing them to excel.
Both the High School and the Middle School have implemented The Leader in Me Program. Check out what they've been up to lately below.
Lighthouse Club Teaches S.M.A.R.T. Goals to 9th Graders
At the High School on October 18th and 23rd, the Lighthouse Club students taught a lesson on what S.M.A.R.T. goals are with the 9th grade Transitions classes. The Lighthouse Club is the student leadership club designed by Leader in Me to improve the student culture. Our Lighthouse students are passionate about being a part of the Leader in Me curriculum. In their first lesson with the 9th grade Transitions classes, Lighthouse taught students what a S.M.A.R.T. goal is and how they can assist them in achieving their goals. Next month, the Lighthouse Club will return to 9th grade Transitions classes to help the students create their own S.M.A.R.T. goals!
Building Leaders: MS Student Lighthouse Team Interviews for New Members
At the Middle School, the Student Lighthouse Team conducted interviews for students to join their action teams. The Lighthouse Team has three action teams: Culture, Classroom, and Community. The Student Lighthouse team is a group of students representing each grade level in the Middle School who work to have a positive impact on the school.
Bulldog Branch Ribbon Cutting: Expanding School-Based Services in York County
On Thursday, October 30th, the Bulldog Branch of First Capital Federal Credit Union held a ribbon cutting ceremony marking the official opening of the Bulldog Branch, and First Capital FCU's second school-based branch in York County.
Thank you, Mr. Meese and our Multimedia Production class at the High School, for producing a video of the ribbon cutting ceremony. Check out the video, linked here.

Cornmeal Canyons: Ms. Kopp's Class Explores Erosion and Canyon Formation
Ms. Heather Kopp's second grade class at Lincolnway Elementary continued their study of the Erosion and Earth's Surface unit. In this lesson, students made hypotheses and investigated the causes of canyons. In the activity, Cornmeal Canyons, students created a model landform using cornmeal. Then they dripped water over this “land” to observe how water can change its shape and to understand how, over long periods of time, canyons can be formed through a similar process.
Connecting Through Stories: Journalism Class Zooms with Adaobi Tricia Nwaubani
On October 31st, Ms. Emily Corcoran's Journalism students at the High School had the opportunity to zoom with Adaobi Tricia Nwaubani. Nwaubani is a novelist, an essayist, and a journalist. She most recently spoke with the women who were girls ten years ago when they and 275 of their female peers were kidnapped by the terrorist group Boko Haram in Nigeria. These interviews were the inspiration for her novel Buried Beneath the Baobab Tree, which the students read in class. We thank Jessica Mims at the Pulitzer Center in Washington D.C. for bringing us this amazing opportunity!
Slithering Surprise: Lincolnway Teachers Meet a Ball Python During Conferences
There was a special "visitor" at Lincolnway Elementary during Parent/Teacher conferences! Some of the teachers got to learn many interesting details about a Ball Python! Thank you Tylanvis for sharing your passion for reptiles with us!

Writing with Confidence in LLI Reading Group
During an LLI (Leveled Literacy Intervention) reading group, students practiced independent writing skills. Tayvin Stambaugh, a 2nd grade student at Lincolnway Elementary, worked on writing sentences that included capitalization, spaces between words, and proper punctuation. Pictured to the right is Tayvin proudly sharing his written responses to a story during our LLI group!
Way to work hard Tayvin!
Empowering Futures: WYASD's Career and College Readiness Advisory Council Meets
On Friday, October 25th, the West York Area School District Career and College Readiness Advisory Council met for their fall meeting. This meeting was led by the Career and College Readiness Committee which includes: Ms. Melissa Appnel, Ms. Vanessa Bicher, Ms. Heather Hossler, Ms. Kristen Kopp, Mr. Jason Lyons, Ms. Manda Meese, and Ms. Kelly Reh. All of the K-12 school counselors participated in the meeting along with representatives from our educational partners, local colleges, local businesses, parents, and students. The Advisory Council discussed ways to support our students in the 16 Career Clusters as they choose a career path during their time as West York students.
Windows to Light: Students Explore Transparency with Stained Glass
Students in Ms. Tracy Overlander's first grade class at Wallace Elementary explored the question, "What if there were no windows?"
In this lesson, students considered materials from the perspective of how much light they let through and whether they are transparent, translucent, and opaque. They made stained glass artwork and explored how much light goes through it.
These observations helped to prepare students to explain and explore an animal (fireflies) that they will observe in the Everglades in an upcoming lesson.
Give Thanks for Great Savings at the Bulldog Branch!

Volunteers Still Needed!
Each year, our Middle School hosts the Jr. Achievement YES! program. This is a highly interactive and engaging way to create some very eye-opening moments for the students.
The YES! program is a half-day program with activities intended to help middle school students gain an appreciation for the importance that financial and career decisions will play in their lives as young adults.
This program is only possible with the help of volunteers like you! There is no experience necessary as training is provided and JA representatives and WY teachers are on hand if needed. You can check out the Frequently Asked Questions and register to be a volunteer via the links below.

Also available now is the opportunity to place a special message/ad in the yearbook just for your child. More information on this, and all things yearbooks, can be found by visiting the West York page of Jostens website by clicking the image above.
Important Information from our School Nurses
Does your child have signs or symptoms of the flu, Covid or RSV? Did they test positive?
The recommendations are that your child stay home until they are fever free for 24 hours without medication and that they feel good enough to return to school. The CDC also recommends (it is optional) that a mask be worn for 5 days after their return if they tested positive for Covid.
Students who have been exposed to someone who tested positive for Covid do not need to stay home from school unless they come down with symptoms or test positive.
If you have any questions, please reach out to your school nurse.
Student Absence Excuse Form
As a friendly reminder, when your child is absent from school, parents/guardians must complete an Absence Excuse Blank, either a paper copy or by using the online Digital Excuse Blank through the Sapphire Parent Portal. An Absence Excuse Blank must be received within three days of a students return to school following an absence, known as the 3-day rule.
The 3-day rule states "No excuse blanks will be accepted after the third day of the date of return from the absence. The absence will be recorded as unexcused for students 18 years or older. Students under the age of 18 are recorded as unlawful.”
While a paper Absence Excuse Blank can be sent in, they can also be forgotten or lost in transit. Don't Miss Out on the Many Scholarships Available!
Our West York Area High School's Counseling Center compiles lists of available scholarships as our high school students prepare for their post-secondary educational plans and funding.
An updated list will be posted at the High School as new scholarships become available. Each time the bulletin is revised, it is printed on a different color of paper from the previous bulletin, making it easy to tell when new information has been added.
PLEASE NOTE: The date due is very important. Please have applications submitted to the Counseling Center at least 6 days prior to due date. This allows the Counseling Center staff sufficient time for review of the application and transcript preparation, ensuring that the application is sent out in a timely manner.
All hard copies of scholarship applications are located inside the Counseling Center in the waiting area in the drawer marked SCHOLARSHIPS. The Counseling Center also emails each scholarship and updated bulletin directly to students' school emails.
If you have any questions, please reach out to Mrs. Gail Wildasin in the Counseling Center.
