Belgian Congo

Define
The Congo is a republic in central Africa that is now named the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It achieved independence from Belgian in 1960 which gave them the name "Belgian Congo".
Detail
- Cause- In 1884-85 there was a conference that divided up 1/2 the African continent among the great powers of Europe. The Congo which was owned by King Leopold the second. Congo was known as a slave labor place because of the rubber trees that was on the colony. These rubber trees were wealthy but they were only used for King Leopoldo's own wealth.
- Characteristics- the government wanted to take over Congo to save the King from public humiliation, In 1960 the nation only had 16 university graduates out of about 13 million
- Significance- Some of the positives were that throughout all this they gained a more formal education system to the Congo, the healthcare on the Congo greatly improved steadily and the government had sponsored to teach indigenous languages in schools, this impacted there country in many ways.
