Message from Principal Wadkins
I hope everyone had a nice three day weekend. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day gives an opportunity to reflect on the ideas of this great humanitarian and the role we can play in realizing his vision for us as a nation.
Today, students will be attending all eight of their classes with finals starting tomorrow. Each final day includes a flex period at the end of the school day. Friday includes an extra period for make ups. Should your student be absent for a final exam or assignment, they need to communicate with the teacher to schedule the make up. Please check our website or Trivory for the schedule of this week.
We have a lot to celebrate in our arts department. Last Saturday, our Wind Ensemble was featured in one of the concert hours at the Oregon Music Educators Association conference in Eugene. Here is a message from Gary Riler, our Director of Bands.
"The Cleveland Wind Ensemble performed a concert hour at the Oregon Music Educators State Conference on Saturday, January 18. They earned the opportunity to perform at this event through an audition process. We submitted a recording of our 2023-24 Wind Ensemble last June and were notified of acceptance in August.
The performance on Saturday went incredibly well. The rest of the weekend, I was told how wonderful the Cleveland Wind Ensemble sounded. It truly was an expressive and emotional performance that this ensemble shared with the educators in the audience.
This was not a contest, it was an opportunity to perform for a special audience. The Cleveland Band program is considered in high regard across the state. Many more in the state just witnessed why first hand. I could not be more proud of this wonderful group of young musicians".
This past weekend our intermediate theater students finished two nights of community performances of student written and directed one act plays told through the epistolary process, letter writing between characters. Our theater director, Michael Payne was impressed with the talent they shared and the success from the two nights.
Also, the work of our visual arts students will be featured in a gallery at the district office along with art from students in both the Cleveland and Franklin clusters. Our artists are amazing and it is wonderful for them to be seen in a gallery space.
We look forward to a successful end to the first semester for our students. I know our teachers and staff have been working hard to support their learning and growth.

So much talent and success during those two nights.
Will You Be A Morning Greeter?
Each school day between 8:45am-10:15am we need a morning campus greeter at the main doors on SE 26th. This is a great way to get involved at our school. This role is easy, but very important. You welcome students and direct visitors arriving to the building after the school day begins.
Click the button and pick a day that works best for you! Please make sure you have a current PPS volunteer background check on file to sign-up. If you have any question feel free to contact the school office anytime.

IB Diploma & Forecasting
Forecasting is coming up! Is your Sophomore student curious about the IB Diploma? Already sure they want to do it, but they need to know their next steps? The IB Coordinator will be offering information sessions (see below) for the Class of 2027 to learn about the IB Diploma, ask questions, and even to complete their 2-year plan:

FAMILIES & COMMUNITY
Oregon Education Funding Forum
SE PPS caregivers, teachers and staff,
Did you know that Portland Public Schools are facing a $40M budget deficit in 2025-2026 on the heels of a $30M deficit in 2024-2025?
Do you want to do something about it, but don't know where to start? JOIN US for an Oregon Education Funding Forum for SE PPS Community
Tuesday, February 10th from 6 -7:30p
Duniway Elementary School Auditorium (7700 SE Reed College Place)
Your presence is powerful. The act of showing up alone moves the needle by demonstrating to our elected officials and district leaders that they cannot ignore the future of their youngest constituents. Bring friends, neighbors, and grandparents.
WHAT TO EXPECT:
πLearn directly about the current state and future of Oregon education funding from your legislators and district leaders β the people sitting at the table in key decisions.
π£ Hear our community speak up on the issues lack of funding is causing our children and schools β such as large class sizes, Special Education Services failing to meet federally mandated obligations, student learning deficits, drops in enrollment leading to reduced resources, and other impacts.
πͺπ½Walk away with simple, meaningful actions you can take on your own time, to advocate to fund Oregon schools year-round.
MEET THE PANEL:
Weβre bringing together influential leaders who have a direct opportunity to impact funding for our schools, including:
Superintendent Dr. Kimberlee Armstrong
Director Eddie Wang (Zone 7 School Board)
Senator Kathleen Taylor (21st district)
Representative Mark Gamba (41st district)
Representative Rob Nosse (42nd District)
Our PPS communities are one of our strongest assets. Yet we remain limited in giving our kids the education they deserve with our current state funding. Coming together is a powerful way to leverage our community to influence change. Simply put, this is an opportunity to show up for all Oregon families in a concrete, meaningful way.
We hope to see all of you there!

PTA Winter Campaign
We are wrapping up our CHS PTA Warrior Campaign on January 31st. If we reach our goal of $10,000 by then, an anonymous donor has pledged an extra $1000 to support our teachers and students!
Your donations are critical in allowing the CHS PTA to directly support our teachers and students with over $15,000 in grants each year. We provide funds for Student Clubs and Affinity Groups, new lab and technology equipment, critical tools, books, art supplies, musical instruments, lecture tables, basic classroom supplies, Weekend Warrior and campus improvement projects, teacher appreciation events, and so much more.
You can donate by clicking here. (https://tinyurl.com/4ycknttu)

Best Wishes,
Your CHS PTA
