Greetings Mustangs!

Happy Cinco de Mayo everyone! It's GREAT to be a Brookwood Mustang these days and things continue to get BUSY with the school year winding down. Our track season is in full swing, students are enjoying field trips, guest speakers, and outdoor learning. And, our 8th graders are gearing up for GRADUATION...which is just a few short weeks away! Here are some important reminders as there is a LOT happening these days:

1.) Our Brookwood Bundles School Supply sale has been extended to May 26th! If you haven't already, get your bundle! Scroll down for details.

2.) Yearbooks are for sale! The due date to order online is May 12th! Scroll down for details!

3.) If you are a parent or guardian who is interested in attending an offsite field trip with your student, we will need you to fill out the necessary parent volunteering forms (scroll down to view these forms). Please be aware that a background check will also need to be run as a part of this process. We appreciate as much advance notice as possible if you plan on attending so that we have time to process these forms and plan.

4.) Summer School registrations have been flocking in, and several classes are now full or nearly full. If you plan on having your BES or BMS student attend summer school, please plan to register by Friday, May 12th. Click the button below for the registration!

5.) May is Mental Health Awareness Month. Mental Health Awareness Month has been observed since 1949, and it is an event dedicated to raising awareness for mental health around the world". At Brookwood, we want to increase awareness of the importance of mental health and wellness in our students' lives. The day provides an opportunity for us, as a school district, to acknowledge the emotional well-being of our school community and to increase our empathy and understanding towards mental health issues around the world. Please join us in wearing green on Monday, May 8th in celebration of Mental Health Awareness."

6.) This week is Teacher Appreciation Week! On behalf of the entire admin team, we would like to thank ALL of our amazing educators for the time, energy, and heart that they put into our students each and every day. Thank you for making Brookwood GREAT!

The Genoa City Garden Club came in to share trees and the history of Arbor Day with our 4th and 5th graders last Friday! Each student was given a tree to plant at home. We would like to thank the garden club for sharing their passion of nature with us!

Our 5th graders participated in Dare this year with Lt. Bappert. Students learned about a decision making model: D-define A-assess, R-respond, E-evaluate.To celebrate the completion and graduation of Dare, the Walworth County Sheriff Department came in and brought a K-9 officer and his handler. The students and officers also enjoyed games and pizza. Huge thank you to Lt. Bappert and Chief Balog for organizing such a special event for us!

On May 4th, the fifth and sixth graders from Brookwood Middle School attended the opera, The Scorpion's Sting. The trip was sponsored by the Lake Geneva Chapter of the Lyric Opera of Chicago. For most students, it was their first experience attending an opera. The opera was based upon an ancient Egyptian myth where Queen Isis saved a child from a scorpion's sting. The students learned about the myth, the voices within the opera, what to expect, and appropriate behavior before we attended the show. The students were all really impressed by the opera and had a great time. What a cool experience! Thank you, Mrs. Bullock, for organizing!

Seventh and eighth grade students in Art Appreciation class are learning to weave. Weaving is an art form that has been around for centuries and is done by people around the world. The class learned the basic weaving terms such as loom, warp, and weft. This lesson focuses on texture, color, and pattern. Here are some photos of students working on their weavings!

In guidance class, students are working hard and learning lots as we finish up the year. In kindergarten, students are finishing up their career unit. In this unit, students are introduced to community helpers and the tools they use. We also learn about how jobs and careers are related to the things we like to do. In first grade, students will begin their career unit focusing on their own strengths and skills and how those can transfer into a job or career. In 2nd grade, students will also continue moving through their career unit and matching their interests to different career clusters as well as introducing them to the many options they have after high school. In 3rd grade, students are moving through a drug prevention unit and will finish the year up with learning about careers and different learning styles. All students will be bringing home their career plan they worked on this year - they are very proud of it and are excited to show you!

Congratulations to our track team for their great performance at the first meet of the season on Wednesday! Way to make us proud, Mustangs! There will be another track meet on Tuesday, May 16th. Come on out and support Brookwood!

As a reminder, we will be completing our Spring testing in the coming weeks. Students in grades 4-7 will participate in MAP testing and select students in grades 6-8 will participate in I-Ready testing as a part of our spring pilot. Although these tests are not state mandated, the results are used to inform programming for ALL students, from interventions to enrichments. Thank you for your help in speaking to your children about Being Brookwood during tests, being respectful of others during this time, and always trying their best. We appreciate your support!

Do you have a 3rd grader who will be a Brookwood 4th grader in the '23-'24 school year? If so, we hope you'll consider coming to our 4th Grade Academy! Meet the 4th grade teachers and other VIP staffers! Take a tour of the building! Learn about a day in the life of a 4th grade student! And, have your questions answered! We hope you'll join us for this informational night. This is an event for parents only - onsite child care will be available. See you there!

Academic Lab will be open on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays when school is in session.

• Students will begin their study time with one of their teachers, right after school in that teacher’s classroom.

• At 3:20pm, students will then report to the Academic Lab in the library. A team of Academic Lab teachers will continue to help students in working on the tasks of focus, as assigned by their teacher.

• Academic Lab teachers will also assist students with putting any unfinished assignments needing to be completed into their assignment notebooks, so that families are in the loop of tasks that still need attention at home.

• Academic Lab will end at 4:25pm. Students will not be allowed to leave early unless a parent needs to pick them up sooner.

• The Late Bus will continue to be offered as afternoon transportation home from the Academic Lab, and will depart promptly at 4:30pm. (Note: The Late Bus will also still be available on Tuesdays for students in athletics).

Families: We need your help in giving our students the attention they need and deserve. We hope that you will take full advantage of this resource when your student is in need of additional support.

Eighth Grade Graduation will be held on Thursday, June 1st! Once again, we are excited to announce that we will be partnering with our friends from Ed Clark Photography to help our 8th Grade families capture this milestone event. Throughout the school year Brookwood has many opportunities for parents to partner with the school through volunteering. Some of these will include, but not limited to, chaperoning field trips, assisting during classroom activities, large school or district wide events, etc. To ensure the safety of all our students, all volunteers need to submit and pass a background check. These forms can be completed ahead of time and individuals will be added to the approved volunteer list. This is good for the school year. If you intend to volunteer, feel free to complete the attached forms and send the forms to your child's school office. Thank you for your cooperation and involvement.
