Mt. Hebron's Economics Challenge Teams to Compete in National Finals
Both of Mt. Hebron's Economics teams have qualified for the finals of the National Economics Challenge, which will be held in New York City from June 1 to 3. This is the school's fourteenth combined appearance in the national finals. The teams will be vying for Mt. Hebron’s eighth and ninth national championships.
In the AP/IB-level Adam Smith Division, seniors Diego Salamanca Murphy, Praneeth Idamakanti, Nandhu Pillai, and junior Mehin Pandya will represent Mt. Hebron at the finals. Sophomores Joseph Jeong, Gabe Venginickal, Vishva Rao, and Aarush Kejriwal will compete in the non-AP David Ricardo Division finals.
After winning their twentieth and twenty-first Maryland state titles in March, the teams competed in the national semifinal round on April 26 against other state champions nationwide. Both of Mt. Hebron’s teams finished among the top eight, moving them to the final round. In the initial segment of the finals, all eight teams will participate in a Critical Thinking Round in which the team has to explain a solution to an economic policy-related problem. The top three teams will move on to a final, winner-take-all quiz bowl broadcast live on CNBC.
The National Economics Challenge, sponsored by the Council on Economic Education, is the most prestigious annual competition in academic economics. More than 12,000 of America’s top economics students participate annually.

Jewish Student Union
Jewish American Heritage Month (JAHM) is a national month of recognition and celebration held each May by Presidential proclamation. It is a tradition that began in May 2006 by President George W. Bush as a bipartisan effort sponsored in Congress by the late Senator Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania and Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz of Florida. May was chosen as the month of JAHM as a celebration of the 350th Anniversary of Jews in America. It celebrates the contributions and experiences of Jewish Americans and highlights how America’s Jewish communities have shaped and been shaped by the cultural, social, and economic fabric of the United States since the dawn of our nation. Sharing the true, diverse, joyful, and powerful stories of American Jewish life helps to confront antisemitism and to defend the core American value of democracy.
- Rube Goldberg was a Jewish Persian immigrant during the 1900s. He is known for his machines that are designed to find creative and extravagant ways to do simple tasks using physics. They were often published as cartoons, and now are the inspiration for many other similar machines. There is even a national Rube Goldberg Competition which challenges elementary schoolers to create these machines.
- Adam Sandler is a well known name in Hollywood. He has acted in many movies from 50 First Dates, to Grown Ups. He is a comedian who never fails to make his audience laugh. He incorporates his Jewish heritage in several ways, including his Chanukah Song and a recent movie of his starring his own daughter, You Are So Not Invited To My Bat Mitzvah. I'm sure that everyone here has gotten stomach cramps from laughing so much from an Adam Sandler performance.
- Many Know Ruth Bader Ginsberg as the Notorious RBG for her fierceness and her determination to protect her constituents. As a Supreme Court Justice, she had a lot of responsibility thrust upon her. She helped pass many policies fighting for gender equality. She fought for women to have access to education, to be able to live independently, to be welcomed in the office, and that juries must include women. Thanks to her hard work, there have been massive efforts towards gender equality.

HCPSS NEWS
2024-2025 School Year Bus Transportation Registration Opened Monday, April 8: Parents/guardians whose children are eligible for bus transportation are asked to register to receive bus service each year to help the school system plan for student transportation needs. The transportation registration process will open at 9 a.m. Monday, April 8 through May 31, and will be completed online via HCPSS Connect Synergy. Registration must be done for each eligible child.
To be eligible for bus service, your child’s home address must be outside of a school’s walk zones. You can verify address eligibility in the HCPSS School Attendance Area Locator. After inputting your address, a window will appear that will indicate either bus or walk for each school level. Please note, the attendance area locator also includes a link for the bus stop locator, which is set for the current school year. Bus stop information for the 2024-2025 school year will be available in August.
You do not need to take any action if:
- Your child is not eligible for bus transportation
- Your child receives transportation as part of their Individualized Education Program (IEP) or 504 Plan, or
- Your child is a graduating senior
Details on bus transportation registration, including a guide to register and scenarios families may see when registering, can be found online.
