A Message from the SMS Clinic
Hello Middle School Families,
We are writing to ask for your support in promoting healthy choices and limiting the consumption of caffeine and energy drinks amongst our students. We regularly see numerous students enter school with various caffeinated drinks, energy drinks, and drinks with high sugar contents. Many of these beverages contain at least 50 grams of sugar, and are also loaded with caffeine (often listed as being from natural sources). Some drinks, such as Dunkin Refreshers, contain caffeine and many people are unaware of that fact. Caffeine consumption is known to cause increased heart rates, increased anxiety, restlessness, insomnia and digestive issues. The added risk here is that students share these drinks with their friends; and often bring an extra drink for a friend. These drinks can be extremely harmful to people with heart conditions, or those who take certain daily medications.
We kindly request that you speak with your student about the health concerns associated with consuming too much caffeine or sugar, and the potential dangers of sharing with others. We appreciate your assistance in keeping our students healthy!
With Gratitude

SMS Staff Appreciation Week May 12 - May 16
Happy Spring Scarborough Middle School families!
I am reaching out to request your generosity to help make SMS Staff Appreciation Week, from May 12th - May 16th, an amazing success! Last year, we treated the staff to breakfast, lunch, snacks, drinks, mailbox treats and dozens of raffle prizes, all because of the generosity of SMS families and local businesses. We'd love to do it again this year to celebrate all of the wonderful staff!
Please consider helping to fund this terrific event via Venmo @SMS-Staff-Appreciation. Or, the SignupGenius link is https://www.signupgenius.com/go/60B0D45AEAE2BA0F94-56089371-staff. SignUpGenius items can either be brought to the school and given to Michelle Mulcahey, in the main office, or brought to my house on May 8th or May 9th. Any and all donations are greatly appreciated!!
If anyone would be able to help with set up, clean up, etc., or if you have any questions, please reach out to me at mtgzag@gmail.com.
Thank you so much,
Maureen Greene

Our lost and found here at SMS is overflowing! Please have your student take a peek to see if any of their missing items are in there.
Any items left in the lost and found at the end of the school day on April 17 will be donated!
Tick Take Home Facts
Hannaford Helps Schools now through June 7
Please consider donating your Hannaford School dollars to Scarborough Middle School. With your help last year SMS was one of the top participating schools!
Students explored the vocabulary words anxious and empowered. They identified situations in which they might experience these emotions and described how anxiety and empowerment can feel in the body and mind. Students explored common triggers for anxiety and discussed strategies to shift toward feeling more empowered. Next week they will learn about the last RULER tool, the Blueprint.
