Scott E. Miller, Superintendent
Issue 11 - October 28, 2019
Greetings SCH Family,
It’s been a very long haul since Labor Day, but Fall Break is nearly upon us. Challenges abound, but I sincerely appreciate everyone’s continued commitment to our children and school communities.
Have a great week and I hope that the turnout for the parent conferences this Friday exceeds expectations!

Food & Nutrition
Food Services is hiring! We are currently doing interviews for kitchen helper staff. We hire staff in as substitute employees and if there is a good fit between a particular kitchen and the individual we hire staff in permanently. This is a great opportunity for anyone who wants their summers off and to be home with their children during school breaks. Substitute employees start at $9.20 and permanent staff start at $10.00. We provide uniforms – including shoes – to all new permanent employees.
If you know anyone who is motivated, hardworking, a team player, and interacts well with children please have them fill out an application to work with us! Instructions for applying can be found at www.SCHLunch.com – there is a box with instructions towards the top left of the screen. Shifts typically begin sometime between 7:00 and 8:30am and are 5 to 5.75 hours long.
Just a few things applicants need to be aware of:
- You must be able to pass a background check
- You must be able to pass a comprehensive physical prior to being offered employment – this is a physically demanding job
Hammond Academy for the Performing Arts
On November 7th at 7 p.m., the Hammond Academy for the Performing Arts will hold HAPA HARVEST, the first combined event for all performing and visual arts programming. Please come check us out and have an amazing experience.
Head Start
Head Start Teachers will be conducting Parent-Teacher Conferences beginning this Friday. At the conferences Teachers will be going over the Speed DIAL-4 and DECA screening results and reviewing the scoring of the first MyTeachingStrategies (MTS) assessment. The assessment is an ongoing assessment which means it uses the following methods to inform the assessment: observations, pictures and videos of student activities in the classroom, student work samples and teacher-student interactions. Each student’s progress is shared in a “report card”-type format. The “report card” includes a rating/scoring for each learning objective dimension based on widely held expectations for the specific age category of each student: students who are three years of age or students who are four years of age (pre-K). The options for rating/scoring each dimension are: P=Progressing Toward, M = Meeting Expectations, E = Exceeding Expectations. Accompanying the rating/scoring is a description of where the child currently is related to the dimension and what the next steps are for the student for that dimension. Examples of dimensions include: Counts, Understands shapes, Uses emergent reading skills, Manages feelings, Solves problems, Uses an expanding expressive vocabulary and Writes name. Parental input also is invited regarding goals that parents may have for their students. These discussions provide Teachers with the opportunity to talk about child development and developmentally appropriate expectations for preschool children in general, and for each student specifically.
Special Education
Basic Testing Terms You Should Know
Intelligence Quotient: An “IQ” is a score derived from an intelligence test which is considered a true estimate of a person’s overall capability. This assessment generally involves language, memory, processing speed, visual problem-solving and spatial relations.
Reliability: A measure of whether the results of a test are consistent and if repeated, product similar results.
Validity: Determining that a particular test measures what it claims to measure.
Standard deviation: A statistical measure of variance which indicates the difference a given score is from the mean (average).
Universal Screener: An assessment given to ALL students at a set time during the school year to measure the academic growth of students. Typically encompasses math and reading.
Mean: The average which is computed by summing the test scores of a group of test takers and dividing by the number of test takers in the group.
Norms: Statistics that describe the performance of a specific group of test takers (called a "norm group") which defines what is “normal” for each age group when interpreting the scores.
Standardized test: A test in which the content and format of the test and the conditions of testing (such as timing, directions, use of calculators) are controlled to make them the same for all test takers. (Accommodations may be made for test takers with disabilities.)
