Cougar Update!

Hello Greenway Families- We have had a great start to our 2019-2020 school year. I walked around our school yesterday and my heart was bursting with pride, joy, excitement-so many emojiis! I look forward to seeing all of you at our Back to School Night, Thursday, September 12th from 6pm to 7:15 pm. See details below.

As we move through the first few weeks of school, I've heard from some parents who have concerns about class size. I thought it might be helpful to share our district process for making class size adjustments. We need to ensure that the students who are registered for our school actually show up. We monitor class sizes in the first weeks of school along with a team from our Administration Center. Adjustments may be made after we get a clearer picture of enrollment throughout the school district. I will continue to communicate with you about our class size adjustments.

What time does school start?

8:05 if your child is eating breakfast. A staff member opens the door and invites children in to breakfast. Many more children are eating breakfast with this new schedule, which is great, unless you don't want them too! Please check in with them and make a family plan about breakfast!

8:10 regular supervision is beginning. K-3 can go to the gym or a library pass. 4 and 5 go to the blacktop for outside recess.Please make sure they do not arrive at school before that time. We do not have supervision. If you are dropping off your child, they must remain in the car until supervision begins.

At Greenway we spend the first few days teaching expectations for all areas of the school. Our new sound and speed levels are being taught to all our students. Also, we teach an trait of the month. This month we are teaching self control with a great mantra! Ask your children about what they have learned!

Kindergarten Start Dates- All Kindergarteners will come to school on September 9th.

BooHoo Breakfast - Kindergarten parents can gather in our community space after dropping off your child in the gym. September 9th at 8:30am Please sign in!

Curriculum Night - September 12th, 6pm-7:15 pm Look for details for this fun event!!

Fall Conferences- October 23rd (4 pm-8pm), October 24th (8am-8pm)

When you arrive at school for Back to School Night, you will be given a "Mission" to learn abut your child's teacher and our school. Your child's teacher will communicate to you what the format is in the classroom. Once you have visited the classroom, you can tour the school, and definitely visit the Command Center (gym). We will many tables to visit and learn more about the resources we provide. When your family completes the mission, turn it in for great raffle prizes!!

Beaverton has adopted the health standards from Oregon. These are supported by a new curriculum. I will be at a table in the gym during back to school night with samples of the curriculum for parents to view. Please stop by and ask questions! The letter below explains our new standards and curriculum.

Today, teachers handed out free CAFE afterschool program registrations! Look for all the information about our free afterschool program. If you did not receive it pick up extra copies or office look for the table at Back to School Night. Registration deadline is 9/13. Students who are selected will be notified on September 17th. Class start on October 7th and end on December 12th.

Your family is invited to join the adventure of Scouting with Greenway’s Cub Scout Pack 605. All Kindergarten - 5th grade are welcome. Come sign up and join in the fun!

Nutrition Services information is easier to access this year, and we have lots of cool information to share!

Remember that the 30-day Rollover Period for 2018-2019 meal benefits will end in early October. Be sure to apply TODAY so your students don’t have a lapse in benefits. Any families whose students go into “Paid” status will be responsible to pay for all meals charged in school cafeterias. Don’t let this happen to you!!

All you need is your student’s ID number. If you don’t have that, you can call your school office

or the Meal Benefits line (503-356-3957). Here are some of your options in SchoolCafe:

1. Create an account
2. Apply for Meal Benefits
3. View and print Meal Benefits letters
4. See what items your student is getting in the cafeteria.
5. Check your student’s account balance.
6. View cafeteria menus
7. Set up low balance alerts
8. Set up auto-pay (when balance gets to an amount that YOU set, the account is replenished from your credit card)

SchoolCafe can provide amazing amounts of information!

If you do not have access to a computer, you can also apply for Meal Benefits on paper. Applications are available in every school office and cafeteria.
