Black History Month
Dear SLZHS Community,
As we begin celebrating Black History Month in February, I want to take a moment to reflect on the history, achievements, and traditions of Black cultures and individuals throughout the United States and around the world. Black History Month is an important time for us as a school community to engage in meaningful reflection, education, and conversation. It is a time to honor the past, celebrate the present, and look toward a future where all students feel valued, seen, and heard.
At SLZHS, we believe that it is crucial to not only recognize the significance of Black History Month but to integrate a deeper understanding of Black history and culture into our everyday learning. We acknowledge that there is always room for growth, both in the way we teach and the way we support all of our students. This month, as well as throughout the year, we are committed to creating a more inclusive, diverse, and equitable environment for everyone.
While we have made strides in promoting diversity, I recognize that there is still much work to be done. It is essential that we continue to push ourselves to do better—whether it’s in how we represent Black history across subjects, ensure diverse voices are heard, or provide opportunities for all of our students to engage in discussions that are open, honest, and respectful.
Thank you for your continued support as we strive to create a school environment where every student feels respected and empowered. I am excited to see the ways in which we will grow together. If you have any thoughts, questions, or suggestions, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
Have a great Grizzly week,
Brock Ahrens
Principal SLz
