SUMMER BAND CAMP HAS BEGUN
Starting July 26th from 8:00am to 4:00pm
ALL WOODWINDS, BRASS, PERCUSSION, and COLOR GUARD will rehearse
at NEWMAN SMITH HIGH SCHOOL (NOT POLK MIDDLE SCHOOL)
Summer Band Camp is REQUIRED for all members of the Newman Smith Band. This includes woodwinds, brass, percussion, and color guard!

BAND SAFETY DURING CAMP AND MARCHING REHEARSALS
We want all of our parents to know that we take student safety VERY seriously. Below you see the rules and guidelines that ALL band students must follow during our marching rehearsals.

NSHS Band Marching Rehearsal Guidelines
- Students are HIGHLY ENCOURAGED to wear a mask while entering the band hall.
- All students need to maintain a 6ft distance between each other at ALL TIMES
- Students who do not follow policy will be given a warning on their first offense.
- If a student does not comply with the rules, they will be asked to leave the band hall.
- Students are encouraged to wear a mask outside during marching rehearsal. Students will maintain a 6ft distance by falling in on a field dot
- Rehearsal outside will consist of section work with section leaders and full band rehearsal with directors
- Students will maintain a 4 step interval (7 1/2 feet) at all times during fundamental practice. Our marching show will be at a 3 step interval (6 feet)
- Students will be REQUIRED to have their OWN water bottle. Students will not be allowed to share
- Students will be released in sections at the end of each rehearsal
- All students will be required to put their instruments away, get belongings, and exit the band hall immediately after rehearsal
Guidelines from the District
- The band halls will be equipped with hand sanitizing stations and touchless thermometers.
- Students will be encouraged to hand sanitize frequently.
- Students are highly encouraged to use a mask at times when not actively engaged in playing their instrument.
- There will be no sharing of individual instruments and mouthpieces without sanitization.
- All equipment that must be shared, i.e. percussion equipment and drill props will be sanitized between each user and at the beginning and end of each day/rehearsal.
- Detailed attendance records will be kept for every day/rehearsal for contact tracing if needed.
- If students are sick they will are asked to not attend rehearsals.
- If the student or anyone in their house is diagnosed with COVID, they will have to self-quarantine for two weeks and must be 72 hours or 3 days passed recovery with resolution of fever without fever-reducing medication.
- Indoor and outdoor rehearsals, students will be 6 feet apart.
- During rehearsals, students will be placed in cohort groups to minimize the spread of any infection when possible.
- There will be no shared food, water, towels, or other products at band rehearsals. Students MUST bring their own water and towels.

The 10 Things you need to bring to summer band camp
1. A completed physical (please click here for more info on physicals)
2. One Gallon Water Jug (click here for example)
3. Tennis Shoes (NO flip flops or sandals)
4. Shorts (NO Jeans or long pants)
5. Light Colored T-Shirt (NO long sleeve shirts of any kind)
6. Hat and Sunglasses (This is HIGLY recommended)
7. Sunscreen (a MUST have in the sun. You will get burned)
8. Your Instrument and music (if you need a school-owned instrument and don't have one, please email Mr. Smith at smithda@cfbisd.edu. If you don't have music, we will get you some when you arrive)
9. Pencil to write with
10. Lunch (if you plan on eating here at NSHS, you will need to bring a lunch with you. Students are allowed to go off campus but MUST be back 15 minutes before the start of afternoon activities)
NSHS BAND ON SMARTMUSIC
All Newman Smith Band students are required to sign up for SmartMusic. Below are instructions on how to create an account and sign up for a class. The first class we want you to sign up for is the “NSHS Marching Band class.”
We are going to use the SmartMusic software for the class NSHS Marching Band.
In order to use the software, you need to create a SmartMusic account and join the class using this code: 3UDR3-QFDGE.

To access the music, you need to be part of our Google Classroom Class. If you do not have your chrome book, you will need to sign in (through Google) into your district Google account. Once you have done that, click the link below and join our Google Classroom.

Remember, that it will not let you join the class until you have signed in with your school email account. Once you are a member of the class, go to "Classwork" and click on "NSHS Band Music Packet 2021-2022." Find your instrument and download it. In this packet, you will find ALL of the music you will need next week.
PLEASE PRINT THIS MUSIC BEFORE YOU COME TO CAMP! If you are not able to print your music, we will have music for you next week.
DO YOU NEED AN INSTRUMENT?
So if you need a school-owned instrument, please come to our rehearsal on July 26th, and we will get you an instrument during our rehearsal. Do NOT worry! We will make sure all students have an instrument for this school year.
NSHS BAND ATTENDANCE POLICY
It is very simple; if you are not here, then we are not successful.
Participation in summer band is required to be ready for the upcoming season. Any student who misses summer band rehearsals will be placed in a shared or alternate position in the upcoming marching band show.
If a student misses summer band camp rehearsals, they will not be prepared for the upcoming season. So that is why every single member of the band must be at every rehearsal.
Students who miss one or two weeks of summer band will be severely behind the rest of the band and will require significant and substantial time and effort to make up the lost time.
However, if there is a conflict with any of the summer band rehearsals, please read below on how to request an absence.

We ask that all students please work out any conflicts, reschedule any appointments, or make the necessary arrangements before requesting to be absent from a rehearsal. Missing rehearsal will affect your marching spot and/or put you severely behind the rest of the band.
