Raptor Report

From the Desk of Dr. Dumbleton
Dear Riverview Families,
What an amazing start to the school year we have had! Students are learning a lot and having fun while they are doing it. I have personally engaged in numerous classroom visits in each of our grade levels, and we are off to an amazing start. Our teachers and staff are doing amazing work each day, so don’t hesitate to reach out to me or directly to them to give them a shout out!
In this month’s message, I would like to share some insights about optimal learning conditions that can help our students learn and grow all year long!
Literacy: For all of our students, it is incredibly important to prioritize reading and literacy at home. Elementary students love to listen to books and talk about books. And, I promise you, it does not have to be complicated! For our students who are reading chapter books, protecting 30 minutes each day to read independently will pay off in the long run!
Extra credit: the more students learn about history, science, civics, auto mechanics, sports, museums, going to the library, and everything else in the world, the better readers they become!
Math: Here is some excellent insights from the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics:
Elementary: Young children are naturally curious and eager to explore their world. Even before they enter school, children have acquired a substantial amount of mathematical knowledge and understanding. As they move through the elementary years, students can begin to lose interest in mathematics when they see it as simply memorizing procedures. You can foster interest and development by encouraging your child to think about and use mathematics in everyday situations.
Middle School: Your child is experiencing physical, emotional, and intellectual changes, and is forming conclusions about his abilities and interest in, and attitude toward, mathematics. Unfortunately, many children begin to enjoy mathematics less during these years and often think negatively about their own abilities. Middle school mathematics lays the foundation that will determine your child’s success in all high school mathematics courses. Middle school students will continue to appreciate and enjoy mathematics if they find both challenge and support in the classroom and at home.
Extra Credit:
Let your child know that everyone can learn math.
Let your child know that you think math is important and fun.
Be positive about your own math abilities. Try to avoid saying "I was never good at math" or "I never liked math".
Encourage your child to be persistent if a problem seems difficult.
Praise your child when he or she makes an effort, and share in the excitement when he or she solves a problem or understands something for the first time
General Learning Tips:
Extracurriculars, Play, and Fun: Our students are learning a ton at school each day. I also want to encourage everyone to support learning at home. However, it’s important to say that we understand that our students are still kids, and they need to have opportunities to play sports, go to the park, and just have fun!
Technology Boundaries: Work with your student(s) to set boundaries with technology and cell phones. For example, setting a 7:00pm technology cutoff time will allow your child to unplug and begin to wind down for sleep.
Regular Sleep: Students’ brains are active and working all day long. A good night’s sleep aids students in their learning and their health and well-being.
Minimizing Disruptions: Students need dedicated time to read, do math, or learn a new skill. Any disruptions to that focus (such as cell phones) can impair learning. That is why we have a no cell phone policy at Riverview.
Long-term Goals: Help your students identify and set goals for the future, and help your students connect those goals to their efforts at school.
Have a wonderful Labor Day weekend with your family and loved ones!
Sincerely,
John Dumbleton
Principal-Riverview PK-8

School Status Connect (previously ClassTag)
We promise, School Status Connect is coming! We have been in daily communication with TSD ITS to get the system integrated through ClassLInk. Priorities at the district have been focused on the implementation and smooth running of ClassLink, student access, and the assessment window. We know that this puts added stress on staff and families. We hope to have a resolution and a running system within the next week. In the meantime, please email your teacher(s) with any questions you may have. Thanks so much for your patience!!
Annual Family Check-In
Thank you to Riverview families who have already completed the Annual Family Check-In (AFC). Riverview has a completion rate of 76% for the AFC. Way to go!
Parents/Guardians, if you have not already completed the AFC, please login to your parent portal to complete the check-in. This verifies district permissions for your student as well as updates your family information. Thank you!
PTCO News
Now seeking school sponsors!
This year's annual Raptor Run will take place on Friday, September 27th. As a PTCO (Parent Teacher Community Organization), we are continually looking to mutually support local businesses in our community.
Our annual Raptor Run is a jog-a-thon fundraiser that promotes wellness, builds school community, and helps us to meet our fundraising goals. As our largest fundraiser of the year, the Raptor Run allows us to fund field trips, extracurricular activities, teacher appreciation needs, and other school initiatives throughout the school year.
During the Raptor Run, all students, staff, and volunteers will
receive a free t-shirt, equating to nearly 1,000 t-shirts that will be worn around our community. As a sponsor, your logo will be featured on this year's shirt and on materials sent home to the families of roughly 740 students.
If you are a business, small or large, that is eager to support a local school, please view our sponsorship options here: https://tinyurl.com/27nkw42k . You may reach out to us at riverviewptco@gmail.com if you are interested in becoming a sponsor or if you have any questions. *We ask that all sponsors sign up by August 30th in order to be placed on the shirts.*
We are looking forward to forging connections with our dedicated community members to create a memorable school year!

Middle School Students! Lego Robotics club is back.
First Lego League for Middle School Students!
FIRST® LEGO® League Challenge teams focus on the fundamentals of engineering as they explore real-world problems, learn to design and code, and create unique solutions made with LEGO® bricks and powered by LEGO® Education SPIKETM Essential.
You’ll: Make New Friends, Share ideas, solve problems on the fly, get pumped over technology.
Why Robotics? At First Lego League events, kids realize more than ever that FIRST is all about teamwork, sharing, helping others and respect.
FIRST LEGO League Challenge teams prepare all season to compete at regional tournaments, where judges provide valuable feedback on their robot, code, and invention. The final test of their work comes at the Robot Game table, where they race against the clock for a personal best score and the chance to advance to a local championship.

Girls on the Run (3rd-5th grade)
Girls on the Run is back with another brand new curriculum! This fall, girls will build confidence in their ability to do hard things, like run a 5K. Fun, interactive lessons focus on using an I Can! mindset to navigate obstacles and try new things. Girls on the Run starts Tuesday, September 10. We will meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays afterschool until 5. Registration opens August 5. Limited spots are available. For more information about the program and to sign up, go to www.girlsontherunrockies.org. Please contact Haley Reif (haley.reif@tsd.org) or Lauren Schafer (lauren.schafer@tsd.org) with any questions.
Attendance
Parents and guardians can now log in to their Infinite Campus Parent Portal site to notify school staff of an expected student absence. This will ensure the authenticity of reported absences, while also providing families with improved communication when a student misses class.
Click here to learn how to request an absence.
While families may continue to request absences by calling their school's attendance line, completing the process via the Infinite Campus Parent Portal is recommended for a faster experience.
Join us and become an AUTHORIZED Riverview Volunteer
All volunteers in the Thompson School District must be registered before they are authorized to volunteer at the schools.
This is includes, but is not limited to, activities such as:
Assisting in your child’s classroom
Chaperoning your child’s field trips
Volunteering at events
Register by going to: tsd.org/get-involved/volunteer
Click New Volunteers (blue box)
Tip: Consider registering your spouse at the same time as yourself!
FYI: If you registered last year, you do NOT need to reregister!
Once you register, the district will provide Riverview with your personalized volunteer badge. When you arrive at the school to volunteer, just find your badge at the front office desk and log in to the volunteer system. This helps us keep track of all the wonderful volunteer hours provided by our Riverview families!
Nutrition Services
Nutrition Services is excited to share that we have contracted with a new software company to manage our meal and application program. LINQ Connect is where you'll find our 2024 - 2025 Free and Reduced Meal Application as well as create an account to access your student's meal funds and account. As a reminder, school meals are free for students this 2024/25 school year! We encourage everyone to complete a Free & Reduced application as it provides benefits to you and the district such as grants, program funding and fee waivers. If you don't want to create a LINQ Connect account and only want to complete a free & reduced meal application, please click this link: Online Meal Applications.
If meals are free for all students, why should I fill out a meal benefits form?
The HSMA program is funded in partnership with federal nutrition programs that rely on that income information to support meals for ALL students. Other state and federal grants for school are awarded based on free and reduced meal eligibility rates - this could mean more money for your school!
PLUS, families who qualify may receive discounted or waived school fees, sports fees, utilities support and more.
*All household income information is confidential and will not be shared without your consent*
Parent Portal
At Riverview we continue to strive to make information easily accessible to families and reduce our paper usage. All parents in the Thompson School District are asked to have a parent portal account. If you are new to our district you will receive an email with a temporary username and password. You can then set up your account at https://thompsonco.infinitecampus.org/campus/portal/thompson.jsp You may also access your Parent Portal through the Parent Resources button on the TDS website. If you need assistance with accessing or setting up your Parent Portal account, please email portal@thompsonschools.org . As parents of students, you can update basic student information and parent contact data, view report cards and complete your Annual Family Update yearly registration.
