School Safety: ALICE Safety Drill
This week students in grades 6-12 reviewed the ALICE protocol to use in the event of a school emergency regarding intruders and school shootings. On Monday, September 23rd, our students will practice this type of safety scenario through a discussion of lockdown and evacuation, including practicing decision making during times of crisis. Our goal is not to create fear, but to provide reminders of the importance of how to respond during a violent intruder event. We never use scare tactics during scenario drill training. We want this experience to be a positive one for our students. While it can make some feel a bit anxious, it is important for students to understand how to make these choices when faced with an emergency situation. Further, I encourage you to talk with your child at home about their understanding of the ALICE (Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate) principles, and what strategies they can share with you, about our safety protocols.

Comprehensive Sex Ed Family Info Session, September 23
Students in grades 4-12 will be participating in sexual health education and HIV/AIDS prevention lesson as part of their classes at OCEAN this school year.
Our district is using lessons from Rights, Respect, Responsibility Advocates for Youth, which includes information about how people get HIV and how to prevent it. It stresses the importance of student-family communication and abstaining from sex. Parents and guardians may remove their children from these lessons with a written request after attending a district presentation about the curriculum. Students will be given other lessons.
Since 2022 all Washington schools are required to provide comprehensive sexual health education at least twice between grades 9-12, at least twice in grades 6-8, and at least once in grades 4-5. Parents and guardians may review the sexual health education curriculum and may remove their children from these lessons with a written request. (RCW 28A.300.475).
