ENEWSLETTER APRIL 2024
Preparing Learners for Tomorrow's Challenges
Principal Notes
The end of the school year is near, just three short weeks left. However, we still have a lot left to accomplish here at ECMS.
Academically, students have been working hard on ILEARN testing. As a staff, we appreciate their hard work and dedication to trying as hard as they possibly can on this end of the year exam. As we told them before the test, this is our chance to show everything you have learned this school year.
Athletically, we have three spring sports teams competing (Track, Golf, and Girls Tennis). This is the inaugural season for our Girls Tennis program. It has been a lot of fun watching them continue to get better with every match. The track season has been fun as well with alot of PRs and record breaking times/heights. When it isn’t raining the golf season has shot a lot of low scores and had the opportunity to play at a variety of courses.
This past weekend ECMS hosted an Academic meet with twelve schools across the area coming to St. Leon to compete. Thank you to Joani Radcliffe, Shane Wagner, Jaime Bevis, and Cathy Bertke for all of your hard work in organizing this event.
Finally, Drama Club put on a fantastic performance of Shrek Jr. a couple of weeks ago. They performed five shows in three days and did a great job at all of the shows. Their next performance will be The Lion King Jr. June 22-23, tryouts will be held after school May 15-17 (grades K-12 welcome).
Important Dates:
May 6 - ECMS Spring Choir Concert (6 PM)
May 6 - 10 - Staff Appreciation Week
May 8 - Yearbook distribution (during the school day)
May 14 - FCCLA Banquet
May 16 - ECMS Band Concert (6 PM)
May 20 - ECMS Academic Awards Night (6 PM)

Agriculture
6th Grade Agriculture:
6th Grade Agriculture students have been busy wrapping up their Plant and Soil Science Unit and transitioning to their Animal Science Unit. During the Plant and Soil Science Unit students had the opportunity to construct a mini greenhouse and grow Kentucky 31 Fescue Grass. Students got to maintain their grasses and even perform a grass cut "haircut" on their projects. Last week, students went outside to take some soil samples. Tests were ran to determine the soil's pH, moisture, light intensity, and temperature. Students have since transitioned to their Animal Science Unit and are beginning working on their Livestock Breeds Project. This project identifies six livestock species and six livestock breeds. The breeds are then further identified based on their general description, origin, by-products, and one fun fact.
7/8th Grade Agriculture:
Students in the 7/8th Grade Agriculture classes have been studying their Animal Science Unit. During this unit, students identified livestock animals based upon their species, age, and gender. Students took their classification knowledge one step further and have identified livestock animals based on their digestive tract. Students have identified the three major digestive systems: monogastric, ruminate, and avian systems, both anatomically and physiologically. Students are currently working on a digestive system project.
Math
6th Grade Math

Science
Sixth graders worked extremely hard on their Science iLearn. April 8 was exciting as students learned about the Total Solar Eclipse and were able to better understand this awesome event through a series of lessons on Moon Phases, Eclipses, and Tides. Sixth graders are rounding out the year with an exploration of the solar system and a better understanding of gravity and inertia.
7th Grade Science
Mrs. Knueven
Mrs. Knueven's science classes started the quarter researching different species to complete battle brackets for March Mammal Madness. Points were awarded for correct brackets and winners were chosen according to their scores. Trophies were awarded to students. We then spent a few days learning about the solar eclipse to prepare for this phenomenal event. Bonus points were awarded for sharing their own photos or thoughts on the experience. We are now studying Life Science. We are learning about cell theory, the parts of a cell and how they function. Moving forward to the end of the quarter, students will build a 3D model of a cell.
Student statement about the eclipse. "The scientific changes that happened during totality is that I saw shadow bands moving across the sidewalk, almost like the world was fast forwarding. Also most of the animals stopped making noise except for one annoying bird. Where I was, the totality occurred for around 4 minutes. There was a beautiful band of sunset holding our yard in like a dome. After 4 minutes, the sun began to peak around the top right corner of the sun. The moment ended quickly but it was absolutely beautiful and I am so happy I got to see it." Rachel Williams
Mrs. Radcliffe
Mrs. Radcliffe's class has been studying biology. They began looking at the parts of a cell, and now are studying how the various body systems function. A project that goes along with the chapter is the Fantastic Beasts project. Students design their own hybrid creature and will have to draw each of the body systems for their beast. Students are also working on a review project "Song Parody Music Video" which is due on May 10th.
8th Grade Science - Mrs. Bertke and Mr. Dawley
Mrs. Bertke's and Mr. Dawley's classes have been studying Bacteria and Viruses. Students learned about their characteristics and how they affect us. Each student picked a pathogen to research and made a "Wanted Poster" with information and pictures about that microbe. Students also completed a lab to discover which location in the middle school would grow the most bacteria. The results showed that some places that we typically think of as dirty, bathroom sinks and toilets, do not have as much bacteria as our personal items, Chromebooks, cell phones, or shoe bottoms. The last unit of study will be taxonomy which will culminate with a frog dissection.
English
6th Grade ELA - Mrs. Andres & Miss Packer
Welcome spring! As we round the end of the school year, 6th grade ELA classes have been reviewing ongoing skills through different class challenges and activities. They are highly motivated by the opportunity to get class rewards based on performance! Additionally, students have been working more independently in writing to put all the learned puzzle pieces from the school year together. With testing season and summer on the horizon, we are so proud of their progress this year!
Reminder: Parents, please encourage your children to work on their quarterly goals. Vocabulary.com & AR- these goals are due Monday, May 20th.
6th Grade Reading - Mrs. Stroh
Happy Spring!!! It is hard to believe that the end of the school year is just around the corner! Reading students are working hard mastering Quarter 4 reading skills. We have used our knowledge of “Central Idea” and have now begun identifying the “Central Idea” of our “Article-A-Day” assignments. We are getting a better understanding of different types of “Figurative Language’ and a better understanding of why it is important for authors to use this in their stories. Students are busy creating a Slideshow presentation to show our understanding of “FL” and will be practicing our “speaking and listening” skills as we share these next week. We will be wrapping up the quarter working on some essential vocabulary skills. We will also be spending time comprehending and reading out loud a Non-fiction book to wrap up the quarter.
Please encourage your child to stay engaged and ask for help when needed. Let’s finish out the quarter strong and stay focused!
7th Grade ELA—Miss Rogers and Mrs. Sohns
7th grade ELA students started the 4th quarter by learning about the 1960s as we prepared to read The Outsiders. They researched the music, movies, culture, and important events that occurred during the 1960s. Students especially enjoyed learning the slang words used during the time period. We are now wrapping up reading the book, and students are really enjoying it. At any given moment, you are likely to hear, “Need a haircut, greaser?” in the 7th grade hallway! After we finish the book, we will be watching the movie, which is always a big hit. On May 20, which is the first day of the movie, we will have “Outsiders Day,” where students can dress like a Greaser or a Soc. We encourage everyone to participate; it’s always a lot of fun!
AR goals have been assigned, so hopefully all students are working towards achieving their goals. The AR deadline for this quarter is May 20. The last day to check out books for this year is May 10, and all books need to be returned by May 17. The ECMS Spring Book Fair will be May 13 through May 17.
7th Grade Reading - Mrs. Mersmann
Hello, parents and guardians, in reading class students have been working on skills to enrich the students' comprehension. Students explored connotation and denotation and learned choosing words involves more than picking a word based on the dictionary definition. Students learned how to use the correct tone using the "you dummy" method--if you can add "you dummy" naturally to a sentence, then the tone is not correct. We unlocked creativity by visualizing the colorful effect figurative language adds to writing. Going into the last month, students will explore author's point of view, author's purpose, and historical perspective. Students should feel more confident navigating through the skills, and I can't wait to see how they thrive next year!
8th Grade ELA - Mrs. Bevis and Mr. Wagner
The end of the year is rapidly approaching! Students are preparing for ILEARN by reviewing fiction and nonfiction selections to evaluate claims, evidence, and reasoning. We are also continuing daily grammar to be better writers and studying Greek and Latin affixes to build vocabulary skills. Students should be well on their way to meeting their AR goals by May 17th. All library books are due May 17th. We will be visiting the book fair the week of May 13, so books cannot be checked out that week. Students are encouraged to plan accordingly.
8th Grade Advanced ELA - Mr. Wagner
We have split 4th quarter between reviewing content for the ILEARN test and participating in a literature review using the Holocaust as our lens for literary analysis. After a brief but thorough background lesson on the topic, we have used a variety of different genres (historical fiction, nonfiction, poetry, etc.) to unveil both the most depraved aspects of mankind and the heroic actions of those who helped bring light back into the world during some of its darkest days. Students should be finishing their books as AR goals are due May 17th.
8th Grade Honors ELA - Mr. Wagner
We have split 4th quarter between reviewing content for the ILEARN test and participating in a literature review using the Holocaust as our lens for literary analysis. We have been utilizing the United States Memorial Holocaust Museum’s identification cards to research both survivors/victims and important historical events/places that affected their lives. Students should be finishing their books as AR goals are due May 17th. Quarter 4 projects are also due on May 17th.
Engineering
Engineering 6 - Just finished up with Autodesk Inventor...our 3D modeling software. Students have learned a real world skill that could be placed on a Resume. They are proficient in 3D modeling software...they can create new parts, edit, and assemble parts into products prior to a part being ready for manufacturing. We are now starting on West Point Bridge Designer...a software Civil Engineers might use to test Bridge Designs for Compression and Tension loads, material types, and cost of construction.
Engineering 7/8 - Students are starting their Measurement Unit...They will be taking measurements in the US System of Measurement in fractional inches...converting those to Decimal inches, and taking measurements in Metric...cm and mm. Students must know how to measure and convert in both measurement systems because we participate in the Global Economy.
Advanced Engineering
Students are completing their Puzzle Cube Project...Where they learned about Engineering Sketching...particularly Isometric Sketching. They sketched puzzle combinations, used plastic blocks to develop a solution of a five piece block puzzle, sketched isometric views of each of the five parts and assembled puzzle, modeled those parts in Autodesk Inventor, assembled those five parts into a cube on Inventor, completed a presentation on Inventor, and completed all Drawing Sheets. Students got actual wooden cubes to build a prototype, package, and labels for the package to take home.
