Principal News
Dear OES Parents,
My apologies for the erroneous information about conferences.
Please save the new dates:
What: Winter report card conferences
Days: Thursday March 27th from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM and Friday March 28th 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM.
Topics suggested for parents while attending their children’s report card conferences
We are inviting parents to participate actively in their children’s report cards conferences coming in March. Additionally, we would like to provide parents with some crucial recommendations for the subjects that should be discussed at conferences. The list of subjects below is merely a beginning point for making conferences more engaging, educational, and effective.
School Conferences for Parents
Engage with teachers for insights into a child's academic progress and social development.
Impact educational experience.
Parents should be prepared with questions.
Please consider the following talking points while attending your child’s report card winter conference:
Academic Performance Overview
Parents should assess their child's academic performance.
Questions should focus on strengths and weaknesses in various subjects.
Comparisons with class expectations and excelling and struggling subjects can provide a clear picture.
Parents should inquire about assessment types and their impact on their child's learning style.
Social Skills and Behavior in Children
Importance of understanding a child's peer and authority interactions.
Parents should inquire about their child's social behavior in class.
Assessment of social development requires discussing child's conflict resolution and teamwork.
Classroom Environment Understanding
Parents should assess their child's response to the educational setting.
Questions like "What is the classroom atmosphere like?" and "How do you encourage student engagement?" can evaluate teaching methods and learning preferences.
This information helps determine a child's adaptation to classroom dynamics.
Homework and Study Habits Discussion
Parents should discuss homework policies and expectations.
Discuss homework time and recommended resources.
Help establish effective study routines for academic growth.
Parental Support and Resources
Parents should inquire about available resources and support for their child.
Questions can include additional help for struggling students and recommended enrichment programs.
Understanding these systems aids parents in advocating effectively for their child's needs.
School Conferences: Importance and Benefits
Facilitates collaboration between parents and teachers.
Questions cover academic performance, social skills, classroom environment, homework, and support resources.
Preparation for thoughtful questions enhances educational experience.
Open communication contributes to a child's success in school.

4th Grade
Dear 4th Grade Families,
4th graders are working with equivalent fractions and reducing fractions to their simplest form! One of the foundational skills for this work is using their multiplication and division facts to quickly identify common factors. Practicing facts at home with flash cards or a multiplication youtube video will greatly support their fraction work. As a reminder, most of our math work has been directly on the HMH Ed site which students access through Clever on their ipads. This site responds to students as they work, giving them immediate feedback about their progress. Please encourage your child to show you what they are learning on HMH Ed in addition to the work they’re doing every week on Seesaw.
If you are following a recipe, talk to your child about how you could double the recipe and how to double the fractions in it! If you’re slicing a pizza, you could discuss different ways to divide it into different fractions as well!
In writing, we are having a Regions Research Publishing Party Friday February 21st at 1pm. If your student completed their project, please feel free to celebrate them when they share their project with the class. Ms. Jensen will also be joining us because they did part of their project in Social Studies and Writing with myself and Ms. Silva and part of their project in Innovations with Ms. Jensen.
Our new writing unit is focused on Problem-Solution stories, and 4th graders have been reading fiction and non-fiction stories in order to identify and explain how authors show us problems and challenges in order to show us how they can be overcome! Please ask your child about their stories at home. They have come up with some incredibly creative characters and story ideas so far!

Continue to reach out with any questions! Thank you!

A very short week! The second graders learned about Helen Frankenthaler, a famous artist that changed the art world for women. We created flower art inspired by her use of bright colors!
Fifth graders compared the design works of Zaha Hadid and Mary Blair both transformed the world of design for women. They created their own unique building designs inspired by the architecture of Zaha and the animation building drawings by Mary. Lot’s of creative students!

Rethink Your Drink
We often don’t think about the amount of added sugar that is put into our drinks. Remember that companies use a lot of different names for added sugar (dextrose, corn syrup, etc.). It is also important to look at the serving size when factoring in how much sugar you are consuming. Companies will often have more than one serving size listed on the label, even though they know most people will drink the entire bottle.

Community Event - March 8th
Twin Cities PBS is hosting a free community event – a Skillsville Premiere party. The Skillsville curriculum is about career readiness – and in every 11-minute episode, three 8-year-old animated characters learn to solve a challenge through a self-regulation strategy that enhances their executive function skill – all while trying out a new career.
The Skillsville Premiere Party will be at American Indian Magnet School (1075 3rd St E, St Paul, MN 55106) on Saturday March 8. The target audience is families with preschool-2nd graders, and we will watch an 11-minute episode, play executive function skills games, make breathing wands, and meet the characters for a photo op. Would it be possible to spread the word at Jie Ming? To learn more about Skillsville, the event, and to RVSP, click on the link: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/pbs-kids-skillsville-premiere-party-tickets-1224216798399?aff=oddtdtcreator
