Dear Brown MS Community,
This time of year is so packed with events that it is hard to keep track of everything. I hope this newsletter is helpful in managing all that is coming up in the final four and a half weeks of school! The end of May is a time when many of us are counting the days. As we begin the process of celebrating our successes and saying goodbye, students react in different ways. Some will be thrilled for summer, others will feel anxious about changing routines and still others will have a hard time saying good bye to trusted adults. The end of the school year has always been bittersweet for me. The number of activities happening make it hard to stop and soak in these fleeting moments. I am trying to be mindful of our Bear Belief to "Be Here" each day by pausing, listening and engaging with our special community - to make each day count. I am grateful to be part of the Brown MS community and feel truly blessed each day.
We continue to celebrate AAPI month in May. Today we had a wonderful presentation by some of our students during all three lunches (see pictures below). A number of our 7th graders danced to a mash up of Carnatic, pop and folk dance. It takes a lot of courage to get up in front of your peers in middle school and we are so thankful to them and to Ms. Priya for helping to make this possible!
I recommend you check out the NPS District Newsletter here if you haven't already. Dr. Anna Nolin, our new Superintendent of Schools, introduces herself and shares some of her vision for the future of NPS in this letter. She has some terrific ideas for meeting members of the community, so please take a look!
On a personal note, it is official, we have a full house at home again! I know this because there is more happy noise - music, laughter, the click of the back door as friends go in and out of the house. Also, my stash of Thin Mint Girl Scout cookies is completely gone, there is a an empty milk container in the fridge and the counter of my kitchen needs to constantly be wiped down...
I hope you enjoy your weekend (especially if you are lucky enough to be seeing Taylor Swift!),
Kim Lysaght, Principal

Bus Transportation for 2023-2024
Bus registration for the 2023-24 school year will begin in early June. All students who wish to ride the bus MUST register for a bus pass.
There are significant changes to the fee structure for purchasing a bus pass this year. Please note the following:
The bus fee has increased to $400 per student, with a family cap of two passes ($800.)
All elementary students who reside LESS than 2 miles from their elementary school must now pay a bus fee. We expect this to impact the majority of elementary students.
Elementary students who reside MORE than 2 miles from their elementary school DO NOT pay a bus fee.
As has been the case in previous years, all students in grades 7-12 pay the bus fee.
6th grade students: All students in grade 6 who reside MORE than 2 miles from their school do NOT pay a bus fee. 6th grade students residing less than two miles do pay a fee. Please visit our NPS Bus Fee webpage for details.
Please use this link to determine your distance from your school.
When bus registration opens in early June, you will be notified via email. You will register and pay via MySchoolBucks. Installment payment plans will be available. More information on bus registration can be found on our NPS Bus Registration webpage.
Financial assistance is available for those who qualify. Please read below for details on how to apply.
Fees for the 2023-2024 School Year
As many of you know, the Newton Public Schools faced significant budget challenges this year. In order to arrive at a balanced budget, fees were raised for many services and activities. Below is a link to all of the fees that will be in place for the 2023-24 school year.
Fees for the 2023-24 School Year
Fee Waivers and FinancialAssistance
The Newton Public Schools provides financial assistance so that all students can utilize bus transportation and participate in school activities, regardless of financial need. To facilitate this financial support, families need to apply for district-wide financial assistance EACH YEAR.
The application for the 2023-2024 district-wide financial assistance waiver is now available in Aspen. We encourage you to apply now so that your waiver is in place for registrations that may take place in the summer (bus, fall athletic fees, etc.) Visit the fee waiver information and instructions webpage to apply via the Aspen portal.

SEPAC Awards
Dear All,
As you may know, each year, parents, guardians, and students are able to nominate NPS and Out of District teachers and staff for a Special Education Parent Advisory Council (SEPAC) Award. A SEPAC Award recognizes exceptional NPS and Out of District teachers, aides, behavior therapists, psychologists, bus drivers, crossing guards, administrators, and other staff for the role they played in a student’s special education journey this past academic year. Interested in nominating an exceptional NPS or Out of District teacher and/or staff member? The deadline for nominations is Monday, May 22nd. Here’s how the process works:
Submit a nomination through the nomination form
All celebratory nominations will be recognized
In early June, your nominee will receive:
A printed SEPAC Award delivered to their home school
A note with the kind words you wrote about your nominee
A short slideshow of anonymized nominations lifting up the good work taking place across the district
Each principal will receive a list of nominees from their school
Do you need to nominate everyone from your student’s team? Please only nominate the teachers and staff members who you feel have been exceptional!
Questions? Reach out to: newtonspecialeducationawards@gmail.com
Thank you so much for your participation recognizing the exceptional NPS and Out of District teachers and staff who work so hard to support special education students. Please help us share this message as widely as possible so the SEPAC Awards can reach all corners of our community!
Warmly,
2022-2023 SEPAC Board
School Calendar Survey - Please Complete!
As described in the district newsletter yesterday, we have developed a survey that seeks to inform revisions to our school calendar. The survey seeks to:
Identify religious and cultural observances observed by NPS families and staff and understand the nature of those observances.
Understand the priorities of the school community in balancing days out of school for religious observances with the state requirement for days in school
Utilize data to consider whether to add or subtract days out of school for religious observances.
Here are the survey links:
Calendar Survey: English (with language drop down at top upper right)
Complete the survey by June 2, 2023 and you will be entered to win the following:
A ride to school on a Newton Fire Department fire engine (grand prize)
