Important Information
LCPS and RRD Event Calendar
We're excited to share the new LCPS and RRD Event Calendar for the 2024-2025 school year! This calendar includes important dates, events, and activities designed to enhance our students' educational experience. Please review it carefully and mark your calendars. We look forward to another fantastic year of learning and community engagement.
This is just an overview for the year. We will continue to share the important dates with times in the section above and more detailed information about events when they are closer.
There may be changes on the calendar throughout the year. We will be sure to update it and put out the changes.
Stay Connected and Informed
Exciting news! LCPS has launched a new app designed to keep families connected and informed with just a tap. The app allows users to conveniently access documents, news updates and emergency notifications in one place. It’s a must-have for students, families and staff, and is available for download from the Google Play or Apple App Store (just search for “Loudoun County Public Schools”). With this mobile-responsive tool, you can receive important updates directly from your school and stay informed on the latest features. The LCPS website and app also offer a centralized feed for all division news, events and announcements, providing a reliable way to stay updated than relying on multiple social media sites.
Staff Book Study
Help for Billy
I’m excited to share that our staff is currently engaged in a book study on Help for Billy: A Program for Restoring the Regulation and Attachment of Children with Disruptive Behavior.
This insightful book by Heather T. Forbes offers a compassionate approach to understanding and supporting children with challenging behaviors. It emphasizes the importance of creating a safe and nurturing environment, focusing on the emotional and psychological needs of students.
As we delve into this book, our goal is to enhance our strategies and practices to better support all our students and foster a positive learning environment.
We appreciate your ongoing support and partnership as we work together to ensure the success of every child at Rolling Ridge.

PE Department Message
Last Call for our Roadrunner Families to join your child(ren) for Bring your Parent to PE Week from Monday, October 7 to Friday, October 11. A big thank you to those parents who have already signed up to join their child(ren) this coming week in the gym during their child's PE class.
If you would still like to join your child(ren) for their PE class, please use the sign-up link here:

A few reminders about Bring your Parent to PE Week:
Please use the link above to sign up for a time slot in which your child has PE class, the sign-up sheet is based on the homeroom teacher. Each homeroom has PE 2 times a week for 50 minutes.
If you have multiple children at Rolling Ridge, you can sign up for multiple days.
Please use the comment feature to provide your child's name.
Parents must follow normal check in procedures by checking in at the front office before coming down to the gym. Our schedule is busy throughout the day, so we ask that when their child's PE class is over that parents exit the gym.
Parents will be joining in all of our activities during the class, including our warm-up, and our main activity of parachute activities. Students will also be learning about bones.
It is encouraged to bring a water bottle and be prepared to be active and moving throughout the 50 minute class.
Due to safety concerns, we ask that you do not bring children to this event.
We look forward to opening up our gym to the parents/guardians so they can experience the thrill and excitement of PE class with their child(ren). We will see some of you over the next few days from October 7th to October 11th."
Monthly Observances and Celebrations for October
Indigenous Peoples’ Day
Typically on the second Monday of October, Indigenous Peoples’ Day recognizes the Indigenous communities that have lived in the Americas for thousands of years. It became increasingly popular as a replacement for Columbus Day, which was meant to celebrate the explorer who sailed with a crew from Spain in 1492.
In a proclamation for last year’s holiday, President Biden said that Indigenous Peoples’ Day is intended to “honor the sovereignty, resilience and immense contributions that Native Americans have made to the world.” The Navajo Nation, the country’s largest tribe with about 400,000 people, has long voiced its support for renaming the day. “Transforming Columbus Day to Indigenous Peoples’ Day will encourage young Navajos to have pride in the place and people they come from and the beauty they hold within,” said Jonathan Nez, the president of Navajo Nation.
Jewish New Year, beginning a ten-day period of repentance and prayer, called the High Holidays, to signify the elevated importance of this period. Most students will be spending a significant portion of each day(s) in prayer at synagogue.
Almost all Jewish students and teachers will be absent on the first day, while some will choose to attend school on the 2nd day. Some recommendations include: avoid scheduling events on the evening before or on those days. Assignment deadlines and exams may also conflict with the holiday on the second day of the holiday.
National Bullying Prevention Month
In October, we recognize National Bullying Prevention Month and the responsibility of all of us - students, educators, and families - to speak up and take action to support the mental, emotional, and physical wellbeing of students in our schools. Nationwide last year, about 20% of students aged 12-18 reported being bullied on school property, yet only 46% of students notified an adult at the school about the bullying. Results of bullying are complex, and “can lead to or worsen feelings of isolation, rejection, exclusion and despair, as well as depression and anxiety.”.
Loudoun County Public Schools reaffirms our commitment to providing a Welcoming, Inclusive, and Affirming Environment that is safe for each and every student to grow, learn, and belong, free of bullying and harassment.
On October 16, 2024, many LCPS schools will participate in the signature event of National Bullying Prevention Month - Unity Day. On this day, students and staff wear orange - a color associated with safety and visibility - to show that we are united for kindness, acceptance, and inclusion.

School Improvement Plan
Goals
I would like to take a moment to share our School Improvement Plan Goals. These goals are part of a three-year framework designed to enhance our educational practices and support our students' growth. As we implement this plan, we will continue to seek your valuable feedback and insights along the way.
Your voice is essential in this process, as many aspects of the plan directly relate to our daily efforts to ensure we are focused on making progress toward our goals. We are committed to transparency and collaboration as we work together to create a positive impact on our school community.
Thank you for your ongoing support and involvement. We look forward to hearing your thoughts and suggestions as we embark on this journey together. We will be sharing more information during our Morning Mingle meetings throughout the year.
Please take the time to review the goals below:
Language Acquisition - By June 2027, the number of Languishing ELs (Grades 2-5) will decrease by 25% as measured by WIDA ACCESS for ELLs composite level.
School Climate - By June 2027, the school and classroom culture and climate for students and staff will be improved as measured by a 50% decrease in discipline referrals and a 10-15% increase in positive responses on staff survey questions related to student behaviors and discipline.
What's the Word with Mr. Burd
Rolling Ridge Community,
As we approach parent/teacher conferences, I want to emphasize the importance of these meetings in fostering a strong partnership between home and school. Conferences provide an invaluable opportunity to discuss your child’s progress, celebrate their successes, and identify ways we can work together to support their growth.
Our teachers will be reaching out soon, if they haven’t already, to schedule these important meetings with you. Your involvement is crucial in ensuring that we are all on the same page and working together to create the best learning environment for your child.
Thank you for your ongoing support and collaboration. We look forward to connecting with you during these conferences!
"RRD is the Place to Be!"
Sincerely,
Mr. Burd
