GIS Practices Our Evacuation Drill
- Our school works closely with the GI Sheriff's Department and the GIVFD. Sheriff Allen, Fire Chief Adam White, Assistant Fire Chief Joe Clark, and their respective teams and I communicate when necessary. They are collaborative partners in our fire drills, lockdowns, and evacuation drill planning.
- The Sheriff's Department and GIVFD are key members in ensuring our crisis response plans are appropriate and implemented effectively.
- Matt Brouillette, our Director of Buildings and Safety, is also a critical member; we often meet with our first responders to ensure all safety aspects are considered.
On May 8th at 10 AM, GIS will be holding their Evacuation Drill. We anticipate this to take no longer than 45 minutes in total. This includes walking to the station, taking attendance at the station, seeing different locations in the station, and then walking back to school.
Evacuation Drills are used if a building malfunction (e.g., a propane leak) requires us to leave the grounds to stay safe. We use fire drills and lockdown drills for different causes.
A plan has been written for our students and staff to practice this drill, leading us to the GIVFD Fire Station. The Sheriff's Department and Assistant Fire Chief Joe Clark and his team will assist in our evacuation and provide all of the necessary safety support to accomplish this drill.
Our evacuation drill requires that we walk to the fire station. I have worked with Assistant Chief Clark to put all measures in place to keep everyone safe. We will have lengths of rope kids will hold on to, firefighters walking alongside our students, a rolling barricade provided by the Sheriff's Department, staff ahead of and behind students who are walking, and all teachers have emergency packets with necessary student information.
Additionally, the fire department will come in that morning and spend time in our K-1 classrooms, talking to kids and supporting their understanding of fire safety and the drill.
If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out!
Earth Day and Green Up Day
Hello Grand Isle Families!
The Student Council is hosting a raffle in honor of Earth Day (April 22) and Green Up Day (May 6).
To participate, send a picture of your family taking part in something that will better our planet and community. Some examples are starting a garden, planting a tree/bush, creating/using a compost pile, cleaning up the sides of the roads/parking lots, or whatever feels good for your family!
You can send your pictures to Student Council Advisors Cathie Larson (clarson@gisu.org) and/or Sarah Allen (sallen@gisu.org) anytime between April 22 and May 7.
We will pick three names from a random drawing of all submissions on May 8. The winners will get a gift card to a local business!
Please email any questions to Cathie or Sarah.
Thank you,
The Student Council
