What is Title I?
Title I, Part A (Title I) of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act provides financial assistance to school districts and schools with high percentages of children from families that may have various economic disadvantages. The federal funding is used to help ensure that all children meet challenging state academic standards. Federal funds are allocated through four formulas that are based primarily on census poverty estimates and the cost of education in each state. Title I is the largest of the federally funded education programs.
Walter Miller Elementary School is a Schoolwide Title I school. As such, our Title I funds and services can provide comprehensive strategies for improving the entire school so that every student achieves high levels of academic proficiency. Listed below are some of the benefits to being a Schoolwide Title I school:
- All students may participate in Title I funded initiatives
- Maximizes flexibility in using Federal funds
- Serves as a vehicle for whole-school reform with focus on improving achievement of lowest- achieving students.
- Addresses student needs through a Schoolwide plan based on a comprehensive needs assessment.
