A Word to the Wildcats!
April 2025
A Message from Mrs. Anita White, Title I Facilitator
I hope you all had a wonderful and relaxing Spring Break! March flew by, so now it is time for students to show what they have learned this year. TCAP testing for our 3rd and 4th graders will be on April 15, 16, and 17 and the following week on April 22, 23, and 24. In addition to the TCAP test, all grade levels will be taking end of the year tests (I-Ready.) During the entire month of April, it is extremely important that the students come to school every day and on time. Please be sure that the kiddos eat a good breakfast each day and get plenty of sleep. Limiting screen time is also extremely important. Too much time on screens makes it hard for many children to concentrate when at school. It is very important to do these things so that the students can do their best on these assessments. The children have grown and learned so much this year, and now is their time to shine! Thanks for being the most supportive group of parents. the Wildcats are ready to crush these tests!
A Message from Mr. K, ELL Specialist
Mr. K is responsible for 38 students at two schools, 31 at WES, K-4, from 8-1:15 and 7 at MPHS, 9-12, from 1:15 till 3:30. At WES he is pulling 22 students for 60 minutes each day, and at MPHS he has 5 students daily. WES has 7 T1-2s and 2 waived students. Under recent changes ELL teachers are required to maintain a similar paper-work set for each ESL students as a SPED teacher, with an annual ILP and quarterly observations.
All Maury District schools have completed the annually required ELPA21 tests, and schools and parents will be notified of the results no later than May 23, 2025. The State of Tennessee has adopted a testing evaluation rubric they use on each student’s four tests to determine whether a student shows growth or has mastered all grade level expectations for mastery of the English Language. Students that showed growth will be scheduled for another year of additional daily ESL support, and students that passed will move into a regular classroom schedule. They will be observed as T1s and T2s for the following two years to make sure they are able to do all expected grade level work. In years past WES ELL students have mastered their annual tests at a high rate and have moved into ranks of T1-2s before moving to middle school.
During the months of April and May Mr. K. will be focused on providing additional targeted support to students that have not yet show expected mastery of current grade level skills. This is a cohort of five (5) Kinders, two (2) 1st graders, two (2) 3rd graders and two (2) 4th graders.. WES has a high number (7) of Newcomer students this year who are just starting to learn to speak and understand English, and they struggle accessing grade level texts and instruction.
Mr. K. has collaborated with classroom teachers to prepare students for taking their TCAP tests.
Classroom teachers have sent home Summer School Camp, (STAR), June 2-26, sign up forms. The deadline was 3-28, but parents who did not get their child signed up should visit with school administrators to be considered should spots open up.
ESL parents with questions or concerns should contact Mr. K at WES.
😊Mr. K
What does it mean to be a Title School this year?
Woodard became a Title school this year as part of the Every Child Succeeds Act (ESSA). Title I is designed to support state and local school reform efforts tied to the challenging state academic standards to improve teaching and learning for students. Woodard was given this designation based on poverty numbers throughout the county, and elementary schools were given priority. Title I programs must be based on effective means of improving student achievement and include strategies to support family engagement.
