Wickliffe Family Update
September 8, 2024 Notes and News
Dear Families,
We had a great short week at Wickliffe, and our students and staff are settling into their routines. This week, many classrooms continued to focus on getting to know one another and working together to establish classroom rules. Our process often begins by asking students about their hopes and dreams for the year. From there, teachers and students collaborate to create expectations for how they will interact and behave in the classroom to help everyone achieve those goals.
As part of this process, students and teachers also discuss logical consequences for when rules aren’t followed. There are three types of consequences that we discuss with students:
- You break it, you fix it
- Loss of privilege
- Positive time-out or take a break
These consequences are designed to help students understand the impact of their actions and encourage them to find positive solutions. Our goal is to ensure that consequences are respectful, relevant, and reasonably implemented, always aiming to create a safe and productive learning environment for all.
The fall session of Wickliffe PTO's After School Discovery Session is beginning soon! This program lets K-5 students at Wickliffe explore diverse interests through fun extracurricular courses such as sports, art, engineering, languages, music, culture, and more. A flyer with the schedule of classes should have come home in your child's backpack this past Friday. The schedule is also posted on the After School Discovery page of the Wickliffe PTO website (https://www.wickliffepto.org/asd). Registration begins on Monday, Sept 9th at 7:00 PM. Some classes fill up quickly, so try to register your child as close to 7:00 PM as you can. Classes begin on Monday, Sept 23rd. Unless otherwise specified on the schedule, they will be held immediately after school from 3:00-4:00 PM and run for 6 weeks. We have some great new classes on the schedule this session - check out Capoeira (a Brazilian art form that combines movement, martial arts, and music), Play Club (supported child led play), and Korean Language and Culture. Please note that we are going to rotate our language classes more this year so that we have space for all of the classes - French will be offered in the fall, and Spanish will be offered in the winter. Please email us at wickliffeptoasd@gmail.com if you have any questions.

Wickliffe Updates
Breathe For Change Movement
Wickliffe's 2024-2025 Breathe For Change Movement (B4CM) offers K-5th grade students the opportunity to explore social-emotional learning and wellness practices. Guided by certified facilitators and teachers, Shawna McEvoy and Sabrina De Libera, students will learn meditation, yoga, mindful movements, and other wellness techniques, which they are encouraged to share at home and in their classrooms. Monthly meetings will focus on different themes, with one day dedicated to learning strategies and the other to restorative practices.
Use this form to sign up your child today!
Please be sure to fill out this form no later than Wednesday, September 25th.
From Our Transportation Director
We are currently receiving calls from parents requesting that their student ride home with another student on the bus. Since our drivers are still in the process of familiarizing themselves with the students on their routes, we are unable to accommodate these requests until October 14, 2024.
As a reminder, after October 14, if you would like another student to ride home with your child on the bus, please email schoolbusquestions@uaschools.org at least 24 hours in advance.
Lost & Found
As the school year kicks off, a few items have already found their way to the Lost & Found. Please encourage your child to check for any missing belongings, or feel free to visit the Lost & Found, conveniently located in the Town Square. To ensure that lost items are returned promptly, we highly recommend labeling your child’s belongings with their name.
Due to limited storage space, any unclaimed items will be donated on the last Friday of each month, beginning in September. We appreciate your help in keeping our Lost & Found manageable and ensuring that lost items are reunited with their owners.

Safety Update
In light of the tragic school shooting in Georgia this week, we wanted to reshare some information about our safety plans.
Safety preparedness: Safety is our top priority for all students and staff in our schools. We make every effort to be prepared for every possible type of emergency by regularly conducting safety drills and collaborating with our school resource officers and the Upper Arlington Police Division. Collaboration with families and local safety officials are critically important, and we are grateful for the strong partnerships in place in our community. You can learn more about our safety preparedness and prevention efforts at www.uaschools.org/safety.
Reporting concerns: We also reinforce with all students and staff members the importance of reporting any suspicious or concerning activity. We encourage all students, staff members and family members to share their concerns either by phone or email. Students and family members can also file a report through our STAY SAFE, SPEAK UP! reporting system. In addition to the link in this email, you can also find the SPEAK UP! system linked to our website and available in ClassLink on all student iPads. Reports filed through this system can be made anonymously. If your safety concern requires immediate attention from law enforcement, please call 911.

Wickliffe Fun Run, Walk or Roll - Friday October 4th
We are excited for our students to be able to participate in a Fun Run, Walk or Roll this year on Friday, October 4th, 2024! This event is a great experience for all - our goal is to unite our Wickliffe community! Parents and caregivers are welcome to join us and we always need volunteers. Be on the lookout for additional information about the event coming soon!
Lunch Volunteers - Sign Up Today!
Chef Jim and staff need two volunteers every school day to help with lunch service. This is a fun and fast-paced activity that really helps the lunch periods go smoothly. Plus, it's a great way to see your little one(s) during the day! Sign up here.
Please remember to bring a hat or other hair restraint and sign in at the main office. Be sure to wash your hands once you arrive, grab an apron, and have fun! If you have some lunchtime flexibility and are interested in being a sub, reach out to Andrea Porter at acporter426@gmail.com to be added to the list.
2024/2025 Classroom Coordinators
Classroom coordinators aim to help teachers. They are a liaison between the teacher, PTO, and classroom families, helping to bridge communication and community. They help with communication by relaying information to families about announcements, reminders, activities, events, and volunteer opportunities within the classroom and the larger community. If you are interested in pursuing this role for your child’s classroom this year please indicate your interest here or email Anita Bracha at a_rigoli@yahoo.com.
Wickliffe Family Directory
To safeguard students' privacy, the school does not share class lists - however, families can add a student's teacher assignment to the Wickliffe family directory. Once others update the teacher assignment for their children, you will be able to connect with the families in your child's class. Please take a moment to add your child's teacher assignment to your family's directory profile by clicking here (or use the PTO website menu option My Account / My Forms / Step 1: Family Information > Next Step to Step 2: Student Information).
The online directory can only be viewed by current Wickliffe families. The Wickliffe Family Directory is a secure, password-protected online directory that allows Wickliffe families to easily update their own contact information and find the contacts of the parents of their student's classmates and friends. Find out more in the Directory FAQs.
Volunteers - Always Needed and a Great Way to Connect with your Wickliffe Family Community
We always have opportunities to volunteer and all are welcome! If you are interested in volunteering on a committee or in a specific role, please fill out the survey to indicate your interest and we will be in touch! If time constraints limit your availability, please be on the lookout for sign up geniuses for various needs throughout the year!
Hello Wickliffe families!
One way we are celebrating our District commitment to student and staff well-being is by celebrating Start with Hello during the week of September 16-20th, 2024. Start with Hello is a week dedicated to making new social connections by engaging in conversation with one another to create a sense of belonging among young people. Start with Hello gives us an opportunity to practice engaging in conversation with one another and celebrating the importance of inclusive connections.
In our school community, you may notice or hear your student talking about The Start with Hello Challenge which is a Monday-Friday Spirit week that provides an opportunity to connect compassionately and show an appreciation for new and future friends.
We hope you enjoy this celebration of Start with Hello in our school community.
Start with HELLO Week Challenge | September 16-20th
- Meet-n-Greet MONDAY: Meet a new friend today and start with HELLO! We will also have talking cards at lunch to help start conversations!
- Take Care TUESDAY: Find time during the day to decorate the playground/sidewalks around the school with positive and inclusive messages!
- Wickliffe WEDNESDAY: Show your Wickliffe spirit and celebrate the three Cs--Community, Compassion, and Civility
- Thank Someone THURSDAY: Find a few minutes to write a thank you card or a nice note for someone.
- Free Play FRIDAY: School wide recess
District Updates
Updates from Technology
iPad Parent Control Information
The UACS Technology department provides 2 ways for caregivers to manage screen time, review web history, manage apps and internet access after school hours. The typical built-in Apple ScreenTime and Parental controls do not work because the district manages iPads for school use at a district level - the typical consumer level settings are not available. Caregivers can review web activity and disable internet access through the Lightspeed Relay Parent Portal. Additionally, caregivers can control app access and set rules through the JAMF Parent app. Questions may be directed to FamilyTechHelp@uaschools.org.
Stickers on the new iPads
Please do not apply stickers or write on the iPad keyboard cases, as devices may be reassigned to other students throughout the year. Reassignment occurs when students graduate, transfer, or when devices need repair.
The new keyboard cases are district property and are durable assets intended to last for several years.
Instead of stickers we encourage students to personalize their iPads using other means, such as utilizing colorful silicone bands to provide a way to uniquely identify your device from other students.
