Empowering Minds
Twickenham School's Mental Health Focus - Written by Mr Savvidis Mental Health Lead
In today's fast-paced and demanding world, the importance of mental health cannot be overstated, especially among students. Twickenham School recognizes this significance and has made it a cornerstone of its educational ethos by creating a team of Mental Health Lead, Safeguarding Leads, Inclusion Officers, counsellors and therapists. By prioritising mental well-being, Twickenham School not only fosters academic success but also nurtures resilient and emotionally healthy individuals ready to face life's challenges. Twickenham School understands that a supportive environment is essential for promoting mental health. From the moment students step through the doors, they are greeted with warmth and empathy. Teachers and staff are trained to recognize signs of distress and offer appropriate support.
By fostering a culture of open communication and understanding, we ensure that students feel safe and valued. Education is key to destigmatizing mental health issues. Students receive comprehensive education and awareness programs designed to increase their understanding of mental health. Through workshops, assemblies, and guest speakers, students learn about the importance of self-care, stress management, resilience and seeking help when needed. By empowering students with knowledge, Twickenham School equips them with the tools to navigate their emotional well-being. As life is full of ups and downs, and resilience is key to navigating its challenges. We recognise the importance of building resilience and have integrated resilience-building strategies into our curriculum. Through mindfulness practices, goal-setting exercises, and leadership opportunities, students learn to adapt to adversity and bounce back from setbacks.
By instilling resilience at an early age, we hope to equip students with lifelong skills to thrive in an ever-changing world. As a Senior Mental Health Lead, my goal is to bring awareness regarding life and all the beautiful possibilities it can bring. Empowering students with knowledge and shared life stories which can make things look and feel relevant, the task is to make students and staff members realise that things can be a matter of positive choice. We are allowed to fail or feel bad. But, whatever the task, and whatever the obstacles, despite how down we might feel sometimes, it is good to remember that as human beings we are allowed to feel like this. And then what is left is to start again and succeed. Life is for us to ENJOY!
