News and highlights
Five district schools receive state recognition for outstanding achievement
For years, the Washington School Recognition Program has honored K–12 public schools across the state for closing opportunity gaps and for students’ growth and academic achievement. For the 2021–2022 and 2022–2023 school years, five Snohomish School District schools recently earned this recognition. Across Washington state, 571 public schools in 178 school districts were recognized.
Congratulations on the following Snohomish School District schools:
- Cascade View Elementary: Closing Gaps for one or more student groups (2022-2023)
- Dutch Hill Elementary: Growth for one or more student groups (2022-2023)
- Machias Elementary: Growth for one or more student groups (2022-2023)
- Totem Falls Elementary: Growth for one or more student groups (2021-2022)
- Valley View Middle School: Growth for one or more student groups (2021-2022)
There are three routes for schools to be honored by the Washington School Recognition Program:
- Closing Gaps: These schools make significant advancements for all students or specific student groups in the area identified for improvement.
- Growth: These schools have at least one student group among the highest performers on at least 60% of WSIF measures.
- Achievement: These schools show high performance on at least two of the following measures: attendance, dual credit completion, English language arts (ELA) assessments, graduation rates, math assessments, and ninth grade on-track.
The Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) partners with the State Board of Education (SBE) and Educational Opportunity Gap Oversight and Accountability Committee (EOGOAC) to identify and recognize schools for the program.
Schools that are recognized are those that have been identified for school improvement supports through the Washington School Improvement Framework (WSIF). In alignment with federal requirements, the WSIF uses multiple measures of data to identify schools to receive additional state resources, tools, and assistance targeted to meet student needs. Those supports vary depending on the needs of the school, and may include additional technical assistance, partnerships with continuous improvement professionals, and access to targeted funding.
Learn more about this state recognition program by visiting www.sbe.wa.gov/our-work/school-recognition.
Thank you, Snohomish!
Our district’s Maintenance, Custodial, and Operations teams are hard at work this summer improving our schools and campuses! Recently, the artificial turf field at Centennial Middle School was replaced. The previous turf, which was 12 years old, had neared the end of its life expectancy.
Other district summer projects include re-roofing the Snohomish High School gym/commons roof; re-roofing the Central Primary Center gym; sanding, repainting, and lining main gym floors at Glacier Peak High School and Snohomish High School; replacing the siding at Totem Falls Elementary; re-roofing and completing exterior and interior repairs on the portables at Cascade View Elementary; adding an additional staff parking lot and improving the pickup/drop off areas at Central Emerson Elementary (Emerson Campus); expanding the Central Emerson Elementary (Emerson Campus) kitchen; replacing the siding at the Cathcart Elementary covered play area; and replacing of the salt generators on the competition pool side at the Snohomish Aquatic Center.
Thank you voters for supporting the district's 2022 Replacement Levy for Technology, Safety and Facility Improvements which help make these all of these facility upgrades and improvements possible!

District colleagues, students, parents/guardians, and community members are encouraged to nominate a staff member at any time.
Beth and Heather, we are proud to recognize you as recipients of the Golden Apple Award. Thank you for all you do for our students, staff, families, schools, and community. Congratulations!

Student photographer receives national recognition
Glacier Peak High School (GPHS) student photographer Azure Birch has received the highest honor from the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards for her photo "Floating Away!" She is one of five Snohomish County students to receive this honor.
This year, thousands of teens entered works of art and writing into the 2024 Scholastic Awards. More than 320 teens from across Snohomish County submitted their best art and writing and over 219 regional honors were awarded to those creative teens, including Gold Keys, Silver Keys, Honorable Mentions, and American Visions nominations, from local Scholastic Awards Affiliate Schack Art Center. Out of these 219 works from Snohomish County, five won National Medals.
2024 award-winning works will be posted to the online gallery at www.artandwriting.org in July. The 2024 National Exhibition will take place this fall at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. Congrats on this amazing achievement!
Christa Mallory is the photography teacher at GPHS.

Panther graduates selected as WAVE scholarship winners
Snohomish High School (SHS) graduates Hannah Wells and Sienna Dilling have been selected 2024 Washington Award for Vocational Excellence (WAVE) scholarship winners. This award honors Washington’s top career and technical education students. Both recipients are members of SHS's DECA program. WAVE is a merit scholarship through Workforce Board that honors the achievements of Washington’s top career and technical education students. There are up to 147 winners each year — three from each state legislative district. Congrats graduates!
SEF awards thousands in scholarships
This fall, 193 graduates from AIM High School, Glacier Peak High School, and Snohomish High School will begin their post-secondary education journeys with the help of scholarships totaling $286,041. These funds will support students as they pursue various educational paths, including trade and vocational schools, community colleges, and four-year universities, easing the financial burden and opening doors to future opportunities. The Snohomish Education Foundation (SEF) was instrumental in providing these scholarships, raising local funds for its own scholarships, and managing numerous other scholarship funds for families, businesses, organizations and individuals from the community each year. The commitment of SEF to supporting district students is longstanding. Since its inception, SEF and the scholarship funds it manages have awarded $3,292,949 to high school graduates, demonstrating the community’s unwavering dedication to fostering the success of its young people. Congrats graduates and thank you SEF!
