Pine Street Elementary School
Principal's Update
Wow, we have had very unique weather over the past few weeks but hopefully the spring weather is here to stay. It is hard to believe that it will be May in a few days and the end of the school year is quickly approaching! All of our teachers are working hard to complete the program of studies for their classes and are preparing for the final assessment pieces of your child’s learning. This is a very busy time of year at our school with final exams and all of the year end special events just around the corner.
I want to give a big thank you to our School Advisory Council for all their support in helping us make Pine Street Elementary such an amazing place for our students to learn. These dedicated parents have done an amazing job, so thank you for all of your dedication and support in making our school such a great student-centered place of learning.
Spring is also a time of review and studying for upcoming exams. Assisting your child to review for their upcoming exams will help them reach their true potential. Furthermore, setting a regular time and location for review will facilitate effective and productive use of their time and help them be the best they can be. Have a great May as June is just around the corner.

Bus Driver Appreciation Day
Join us on May 6 as we recognize and thank our school bus operators for keeping the safety of our students their first priority. We encourage you, and your children, to take a moment to say thanks to our bus operators—who go above and beyond to provide safe and timely transportation to our students.
On behalf of Pine Street, THANK YOU to all of our school bus operators for a job well done.

First Nations' Fridays
Way up north in two of Canada's territories, Nunavut and the Northwest Territories, there are very few roads at all. While the Northwest Territories has some highways that keep it connected to the south, there are no roads connecting Nunavut to the rest of Canada. There are cars in Nunavut, but these can only travel on the roads within communities. In Iqaluit, the capital of Nunavut, there is only one paved road and there are no traffic lights. This paved road is the only one in the whole territory, a territory that makes up one-fifth of Canada's land mass.
In the wintertime these vast territories are covered with ice and snow. While you might think winter travel in the North means wooden sleds being pulled by hard-working teams of Husky dogs, skidoos have replaced dog sleds as the most popular method of transportation during the winter months. Many Inuit hunters still travel along the ancient dog sled routes while out hunting on their skidoos, an interesting combination of old traditions and new technology.
