Courtney Sharkey Named as New Executive Director of Teaching and Learning
The Sunnyvale ISD names Mrs. Courtney Sharkey as Sunnyvale ISD’s
new Executive Director of Teaching and Learning.
With a deep passion for education and a proven track record of leadership, Sharkey is ready to take on this vital role, building on her successful experience as Director of Advanced Academics, Accountability & CTE.
Sharkey said her passion for teaching and learning, which has been fueled by the incredible talent of our students and teachers, motivated her to take on this role. She also credits the inspiring instructional culture fostered by Jennifer Settle, who is retiring as Executive Director of Teaching and Learning at the end of this year.
As Executive Director of Teaching and Learning, Sharkey will focus on strengthening the instructional core— the intersection of content, teacher capacity, and student engagement—to ensure success for all students.
“This year has shown me just how incredible our students are and how much talent our teachers bring every day,” Sharkey said.“I am eager to work with our team to see how each of us can leverage our strengths to best support our district.”
While stepping into this more inclusive leadership role, Sharkey will remain actively involved in Advanced Academics and Accountability, ensuring continued growth in these critical areas.
“In many ways, I will be continuing the same work, but on a larger scale, she said. “As Director, I consistently use data to inform decisions, partner with teachers to enhance instructional outcomes, and seek opportunities to build capacity—both in myself as a leader and in our teachers and staff.”
Sharkey said she is excited about the opportunity to take her experiences and connections made as Director of Advanced Academics, Accountability and CTE to make a greater impact in her new position. She has worked extensively on collaboration across departments and ensuring strategic alignment, building trust with teachers and leaders at every step. She said she believes these will continue to be vital aspects of her new role.
“My approach to both leadership and education is anchored in my philosophy of education, which centers around the belief that all students have inherent worth and the ability to learn, and it is our privilege and obligation to support students on their journey to excellence,” Starkey said. “The greatest impact on student learning comes from a well-aligned and effective curriculum, well-trained teachers, and actively engaged students. So, our efforts will align with these key areas.”
Sharkey believes that a strong teaching and learning culture is vital to supporting student success, and she said she is excited to contribute to shaping the path forward for Sunnyvale ISD.
“As educators, our success is ultimately measured by our students' successes,” she said.” “If we see growth in academic achievement, expanded college and career readiness opportunities, and increased student engagement, that would be more than enough for me.”
