VISION SCREENING INFORMATION
Children should have routine vision checks and eye exams to ensure their eyes are developing normally:
- Newborn physical exam: Within 72 hours of birth, a doctor or nurse will check for any obvious physical problems with the eyes.
- 6β8 weeks: A follow-up physical exam to check for any problems that were not found at birth.
- 1 year or 2β2.5 years: A health and development review may include questions about your child's eyesight.
- 3β4 years: A more complete eye exam to ensure normal vision development.
- 4β5 years: Vision screening at school to check for reduced vision in one or both eyes.
- 8, 10, 12, and 15 years: Vision screening should occur at these ages.
If your child has any of the following, you should consider an eye exam by a specialist:
- Family history of eye problems, especially genetic eye diseases
- Signs of misaligned eyes, lazy eye, or nearsightedness
- A red, swollen, or cloudy eye
If your child has special health care needs, they may be at a higher risk for vision disorders and should receive an eye exam from an eye care professional.
