Principal's Desk
Dear CMIT South Elementary School Tiger Community,
As we navigated through this past week of February 20-23, 2024, there are several exciting updates and important information we'd like to share with you.
Parent-Teacher Conferences and Ongoing Communication
Parent-teacher conferences were held this past Tuesday during a two-hour delay, fostering essential partnerships between families and educators. We encourage continued communication to support our students. We know all families who may have requested a conference may not have been seen please reach out to your scholar’s teacher for any conference requests. Keep in mind Tuesdays are collaborative planning meetings and staff are not available during their planning times on those days.
Upcoming Field Trips and Volunteer Appreciation
We are thrilled about the upcoming field trips and extend our heartfelt thanks to families who have completed the steps to volunteer. Your involvement enhances our students' experiences. If you haven't already, consider joining us on these exciting journeys!
Black History Program - March 1, 2024
Save the date! Our Black History Program is scheduled for Friday, March 1, 2024. Families of students performing are invited to attend in person during their respective grade-level sessions (K-2 and 3-5). Let's come together to celebrate the rich tapestry of African American history.
Snack Donations for Thursday Clubs
We kindly ask families of students in clubs for snack donations on Thursdays. Your contributions go a long way in ensuring a positive and energized club experience for our students. Thank you for supporting opportunities for students to extend their learning in unique and engaging ways after school.
Student Expectations
As a reminder, please familiarize yourself with the student expectations outlined in the Student Rights and Responsibilities of Prince George's County and CMIT South Elementary. We strive to create a safe, inclusive, and conducive learning environment for all. The administration will be reviewing those expectations with students this week Tuesday through Thursday in grade-level assemblies. Also, appropriate use of technology and devices continues to be a theme for our 21st-century learners and schools. If your child is participating in CLF-sponsored programs requiring their Chromebook, we kindly request families to purchase their charger for home use (any 45-watt USB-C Chromebook charger will suffice).
Celebrating Academic Achievements
Let's celebrate the outstanding growth achieved by our dedicated teachers and students between the Fall and Winter NWEA MAP tests. Their commitment to student success is truly commendable. We are focusing on growth as moving students to higher levels of achievement is the goal of every educator. Those students and grade levels who are engaged in tutoring via Power Hour, Saturday Academy, and Carnegie Learning Math tutoring programs are showing growth. Recognition of the Highest Growth on NWEA MAP will also be shared after our Spring testing cycle as well.

Professional School Counselor's Den
Hazel Health Services Coming to CMIT South Elementary
What is Hazel Health?
Hazel Health has partnered with Prince George's County Public Schools to provide access to quality healthcare services for all students, at no cost to families, this school year. Students can be referred by the school counselor or their parent/guardian. A designated person at the school or a parent/guardian can initiate a video visit with a Hazel health care provider while your child is at school or at home to provide either physical or mental health services. Therapy sessions with Hazel Health are a safe space and are private and confidential.
How can your child receive services?
Waitlists for mental health services for children are sometimes long or sometimes as parents it's tough to find the time to take our children to appointments which makes it difficult for them to receive the immediate support they need. Hazel Health is geared to bridge that gap. Students are able to receive these services free, virtually and while in school. If you have any questions please feel free to visit their website https://www.hazel.co/ or reach out to me.
Lost and Found
The “Lost and Found” collection bin is located in the cafeteria. Any found articles (coats, hats, gloves, backpacks, lunch boxes, etc.) are placed in the bin. Found small items (keys, glasses, jewelry) are stored in the Main Office. Students may check the “Lost and Found” for lost items before or after school, or during lunch. All items left unclaimed at the end of each academic quarter are donated to charities or are discarded. Parents are strongly encouraged to label all belongings with first and last names.

Grade Level Updates
Hello families!
Friendly reminder that our field trip will be this upcoming Monday, February 26, 2024. All chaperones should park in the back of the school and enter into the cafeteria by 8:15a. We should depart our school around 9 am and return by 2 pm. For families meeting us at the site, it is very important that your child’s teacher is aware and that it is understood that if your scholar rides the bus to the Aquarium, they must ride the bus back to our school. Your child must also, stay with the assigned chaperone, so you must join their chaperone group. Students will not need their bookbags unless they are needed for clubs or enrichment. Please do not send any items with them, only their bagged lunch and a jacket. Also, please pack their lunch in a disposable bag (paper or plastic) and label it with their name. It is imperative that no glass, plastic containers, lunchboxes, or thermos containers be sent on this day. Only items that can be thrown away should be taken on the trip. We will be eating lunch on the bus on the departure back to school. Here is no lunch area inside of the Aquarium. Therefore, allow your child to have a nice breakfast on Monday morning since we are eating lunch later than usual. Students should wear their PE uniforms for our trip as well so all scholars can be dressed similarly.
Lastly, please remind your child about the importance of listening to all adults on the trip and making safe choices. Thank you and we look forward to a great field trip!

Grade level blurb:
Hello Tiger Family,
I hope that everyone is doing well. We have completed our fifth week of the third quarter. The Progress Report Window has closed and progress for the quarter has been updated for your review on Schoolmax. As always, please check Schoolmax to stay up to date with your scholar’s grades and progress in their classes.
Fourth graders are slated to return their Chromebooks on Friday, March 1, 2024. In preparation for Chromebooks to be returned, we require the charger that was given with the computer. We also ask that all stickers and other labels be removed from the Chromebooks. Please ensure that your scholar has also removed any plugins they may have for their computer mouse or headphones. For more information regarding the next steps for Chromebook usage outside of school please contact the administration or our technology department.
Read Across America Day
On Friday, March 1, 2024, fourth-grade students will celebrate Read Across America Day. To prepare for this day we ask that students on Friday bring their favorite books and a stuffed animal. We will “Drop Everything And Read” D.E.A.R. on Friday in the afternoon. Students will have an opportunity to read whatever book they would like with their stuffed animals. We ask that the stuff animal students bring is not bigger than a composition book. Students are not permitted to have the stuffed animal during class; it will only be allowed during our D.E.A.R. time. For more information please reach out to your scholar’s reading teacher.
This is a friendly reminder that late work is only accepted if a student has an excused absence! If a scholar is absent and does not bring a note they will earn a 0 on the assignment that was missed. Please read the reminders to ensure that you are partnering with your scholars to make them successful in school.
Fourth Grade Reminders:
Scholars should come to school each day with a fully charged Chromebook. As a STEM school technology is utilized in all classes and students are completing assignments digitally. It is difficult to charge Chromebooks during class.
Please check Schoolmax weekly to see the scholar’s updated grades. Canvas is a Learning Management System that scholars utilize to complete assignments and get access to materials. The grades provided in Schoolmax are those that will be used to calculate progress reports and report cards.
If your scholar is absent, please share a note with the homeroom teacher within 3 days of your scholar returning to school. For students to receive make-up work you must provide a note stating; the student’s name, the date of absence, and the reason for absence. Work is provided to students upon their return to school with an absence note.
Each week we suggest checking your scholar's browser history and YouTube history. This is to make sure that your scholar isn’t going to a site or watching videos that you would not approve of. Teachers are limited to only seeing activity on your scholar’s screen when they are in class. We utilize a system called Hapara that allows us to prevent access to certain sites. We are asking that you check your scholar's computer history weekly.
