Unami United
October 23, 2017
What a beautiful day for a walk! Unami students and staff enjoyed a beautiful walk around our school and campus during our extended advisory on Friday. Students showed their school pride by wearing their Orange & Black, and their commitment to service with their donations to Hurricane Relief.
Students' behavior was exemplary! I could not have been more proud...their energy and enthusiasm was infectious! The walk culminated with our UMS aerial photo. It was an anxious few minutes as we anticipated the take-off of our drone....and a collective cheer as it ascended! A big thank you to Mr. Myers for his drone flying and photographing expertise.
We are continuing our Hurricane Donation Relief Drive through the end of the October. Students can continue to donate to either their advisory class directly, or parents/guardians can sponsor their student through MyPaymentsPlus. To sponsor your student, go to My Payments Plus (www.mypaymentsplus.com) and find Unami Walk for Hurricane Relief. If you have trouble with My Payments Plus, please email Mrs. Susan Biebl. Again, all monies raised will be donated to the American Red Cross to support their Hurricane Relief efforts.
We hope you enjoy our newsletter!

INSTRUCTIONAL SPOTLIGHTS
TEAM GNEISS SPOTLIGHT
In Mrs. Caldwell's 7th grade science class, students were observing the bounce of a tennis ball to determine the types of energy conversions that are involved. In order to make more accurate measurements, the students used the slow motion video capabilities of their cell phones to determine the height of the bounce. This lab was very energetic!!
INTERACTIVE SCIENCE NOTEBOOKS
In Ms. Gresko's 7th grade science class, students use Interactive Science Notebooks as a way to learn visually. Over 85% of people are visual learners; this visual and hands on tool helpsstudents to recall and apply information learned in class!
In this particular example, the students were working on density. The visual representation of the heart helps the students remember that mass is divided by volume when calculating density. On the left, the students were given density problems. Then, they can flip open the problems and see the work that correlates to get the answer to that problem
TEAM LEGACY SPOTLIGHT
FRESHMAN HOUSE...
WORLD LANGUAGE SPOTLIGHT
ENVIRONMENTALISTS & TOP CHEFS..
In 9th grade Cooking – students learned how to use a fondue pot by making pizza fondue, and they learned proper fondue etiquette. They thoroughly enjoyed the taste of the pizza fondue, and the social aspect of eating around the fondue pot with others.
Cookie Dough Will Be Here Soon!
For those who ordered Cookie Dough through the Magazine Drive, it is being delivered to Unami on Wednesday, November 8. Cookie Dough will be available for pickup from 2:00-6:00 p.m.
Mark your calendars!
Our Day at the Linc...
This past Thursday, Ocotber 19, students who earned attendance through the Magazine Drive took an exclusive trip to tour Lincoln Financial Field for the Eagles Experience. As a chaperone attendee on the trip, I can say the visit exceeded my expectations. Our visit was comprised of the following:
- A brief history of the Eagles franchise and stadium;
- Access/tour special events locations, including club boxes and club box reception area;
- Access/tour of media broadcast areas (e.g. reporters room; TV broadcast booth);
- Access/tour of the inner workings of Lincoln Financial Field, where students observed workers preparing for the next game;
- Visit to the press conference area.
And then, the epic highlights...
- Simulated walk down the players entry tunnel onto the field. Check out the video below for a taste of this experience.
- Visit to the actual players locker room.
For sure, the trip was loads of fun, but as and educator, I was truly impressed with some of the educational components. This included information about the history of the team and its connection to the city, in-depth understanding of the many green initiatives surrounding the stadium, and information about occupations surrounding the NFL and stadiums in general (e.g. pressroom etiquette; the multitude of jobs involved in prepping for a game).
Thanks to the attendees for their contributions to the Magazine Drive and for their stellar representation of Unami on the trip. I think they both had fun and learned a great deal!
Halloween Dance Was Frightfully Fun!
Last Friday, October 14, Unami students put their Halloween costumes on a few weeks early for our Halloween Dance! Of course, there were current (and some spooky) tunes for dancing, but that was just part of the fun. Other highlights included some fun Halloween games, such as Toss the Ring on the Witch's Hat and the biggest draw of the evening - the Haunted Hallway. The brainchild of our Butler Elementary alumni (let's give Butler their due... their Haunted Hallway is the original!), our Student Council organizers turned part of the auxiliary gym into a spooky hall with Unami zombies and some fanciful frights! It received ghoulish reviews.
Hugs thanks to our Student Council members for organizing and decorating for the event. It was an awesome (a even a bit scary) event!
UNAMI CLUBS...GET INVOLVED!
The best way to have a fantastic experience at middle school is to get involved. Students can explore their interests, make new friends, contribute to their school and community, and HAVE FUN!
Each newsletter will highlight the clubs we have here at Unami and when they will be running each week. They are all after-school, so please pay close attention to the dismissal times as parents/guardians will need to pick-up their children at the conclusion of the club!

LINK 2 UNITY NOVEMBER WORKSHOP...INVITATIONS COMING SOON!
Throughout the year, and especially in Unami United Advisory, we support our students as they learn to find their voice and "stand up" for themselves and others. Once our students leave Unami and go on to CB South High School, building student advocacy is continued and broadened through a program called "First LINK." As a part of LINK's service outreach, those South students work with our Unami students to foster community building and servant leadership. We call this "Link to Unity" or L2U for short.
We will have our first L2U on Saturday, November 11th for all interested 8th and 9th graders who have not been linked before. To receive an invitation to L2U, students (or parents, guardians, teachers) need to fill out a quick nomination form.
L2U starts at 8:30 and ends at 11 a.m. Being that it is an action and learning packed two-and-a half hours, students must commit to attending the entire session (no leaving early). Participation is free and student participants get a L2U t-shirt at the end.
LINK LEADERS WANTED
8th & 9th Graders,
If you have already participated in L2U before, and you want to remain involved in this student advocacy program, click here to complete a Link Leader application. Link Leaders will assist in leading L2U Saturdays to promote community, energy and action at Unami! This is a great leadership opportunity, which can be documented for NJHS or NHS applications!
