Pedestrian Safety Reminders
The safety of our students is a top priority for the Sedro-Woolley School District. Recently, neighbors near Cascade Middle School and Evergreen Elementary School have raised concerns about pedestrian safety, particularly in the Township Street and McGarigle Road area. This section of Township Street is part of a state highway, and its busy traffic can create challenges for both pedestrians and drivers. To help address these concerns, we want to remind ALL families about important pedestrian safety practices.
Crosswalk Safety Tips for Students and Families:
Make Eye Contact: Always make eye contact with drivers before stepping into the crosswalk. This ensures they see you and are prepared to stop.
Wait for Cars to Stop: Do not enter the crosswalk until vehicles have fully stopped. Even if you have the right of way, it’s important to be cautious.
Follow Crossing Guards: At locations like Township Street and McGarigle Road near Evergreen and Cascade, crossing guards are present in the morning and afternoon. Be sure to wait for their signal before crossing. They will lead the way with their caution signs extended visibly, ensuring it’s safe for everyone.
Stay Alert: Avoid distractions such as texting or using headphones while walking. Students should stay focused on their surroundings rather than their phones.
Stay Visible: It can be hard for drivers to see pedestrians, especially in the dark or during bad weather. Encourage your children to wear light-colored clothing or reflective items if they walk to or from school, practices, or other activities in low-light conditions.
How Parents Can Help:
We ask all parents to work with us to educate children about the importance of pedestrian safety. Whether your child is a young learner or a teenager, reinforcing safe behaviors like using crosswalks, waiting for signals, and being alert can help prevent accidents.
We appreciate your partnership in keeping our community safe. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to your school or the district office.
Wellness Center
There is currently no medical provider available at the Woolley Wellness Center at Sedro-Woolley High School due to a temporary gap in provider coverage. PeaceHealth, which operates the clinic for district staff and SWHS and State Street High School students, is actively working to recruit new providers, but there is no specific timeline yet for when full services will resume.
Please note that while the medical assistant is on-site, she is only available to answer questions and provide resources. She cannot treat patients.
We understand how important the Wellness Center is to our students and staff, and we are committed to fully restoring services as soon as possible.
We will keep you updated as PeaceHealth works through this transition. Thank you for your understanding and patience.
Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is open!
The Washington Student Achievement Council and Washington State Office of Equity are among the state agencies trying to help seniors and their families access financial aid towards college or career training. The Washington State Office of Equity will host a financial aid webinar on Tuesday, Dec. 3. Another webinar will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 11.
Washington state leads the nation in need-based financial aid. Nearly half of all Washington families qualify for aid through the generous Washington College Grant. That money can be used for four-year and two-year institutions, registered apprenticeships, technical college, and more. Beyond tuition, it can also help pay for books and materials, and more.
But too many eligible families miss out on this assistance. Only half of 12th-grade students file their FAFSA or WASFA every year in Washington, the fourth-lowest rate in the nation. In total, that cost families $65 million in unrealized assistance.
The Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA, is for need- and non-need-based financial aid from both the federal and state governments, as well as your college and some private scholarships. Most people should complete the FAFSA to get the most money available.
The Washington Application for State Financial Aid, or WASFA, is for financial aid from the state and some college aid, and is only for people who don’t fill out a FAFSA due to immigration status—including being undocumented—or other federal aid eligibility issues. You can still be considered a Washington resident if you are undocumented. Learn more about what it takes on the Student Residency web page.
Who can help me apply for financial aid?
- Book an appointment with your high school counselor or college & career specialist. They can answer questions about your specific path and circumstances.
- Email the admissions or financial aid office at any colleges you’re interested in attending, or give them a call to talk through the process.
- Check out the plan your future page, or view our FAFSA demo videos.

Teen Court
Students Shine in November Teen Court Case
Students participating in the Teen Court program at Skagit County Superior Court showcased remarkable maturity and dedication during last week’s case. Teen Court provides an invaluable opportunity for students to engage in real-life restorative justice practices, working alongside attorney mentors to serve in various court roles.
This month, students demonstrated exceptional teamwork and professionalism. Alexia Ceja went above and beyond by translating a parent questionnaire for the team, ensuring that everyone was fully prepared. She and Mason Requa served as "youth advocates," representing their peers with skill and compassion.
We are deeply grateful for our partnership with the Skagit County Superior Court, which invests time and resources to make this program a success. Together, we are empowering students to develop critical skills while making a meaningful impact in their community.
Thank you to all the students and mentors for their dedication to this program!

The evening was entirely student-led, with LIA and Latinos Unidos taking the reins in planning and execution. Their goal was to create a space where community members could come together, deepen their understanding of different cultures, and honor the rich traditions that make Sedro-Woolley a unique place to live and learn.
Thank you to the students and staff who made this night possible, and to everyone who came out to celebrate! Events like this remind us that diversity truly strengthens our community.

Building Bridges with Kindness
Multilingual Learners Celebrate Kindness at Central Elementary
At Central Elementary School, Multilingual Learners recently embraced the theme of kindness through a creative art project. Guided by teacher Julie Stemme, students explored what kindness means to them and shared heartfelt responses, ranging from lending a helping hand to family members to offering a simple smile.
Among their answers:
- "Help your baby cousin because he is tiny."
- "Help my mom make dinner and help her when she is sick."
- "Smile."
- "Help someone up who fell down."
- "Give my mom a hug because I love her."
- "Help my mom with the dishes."
- "Helping my mom with my baby sister."
These thoughtful reflections were brought to life through a mural. The artwork serves as a daily reminder of the power of small, kind acts and highlights the shared values within the school community.

**Please note that most youth sports are run by volunteer boards of directors. Coaches are most often fellow parents and there is a significant referee shortage amongst almost every sport. Volunteering to coach or training to become a referee is one of the best opportunities a parent or guardian has to stay involved in their child's life through various stages of development!

Reporting Harassment, Intimidation or Bullying
The district uses a reporting system for harassment, intimidation and bullying (HIB) through SafeSchools Alert. Students, parents and community members can report HIB and other unsafe behaviors anonymously through phone, text, email or web. Students, parents and community members should utilize SafeSchools Alert as it creates a record of the report, and each incident must be investigated. Visit https://swsd-wa.safeschoolsalert.com/ to report an incident or use the alternative methods below.
