CONTROL WHAT'S IN YOU

Former UCLA basketball coach John Wooden, one of the greatest coaches who ever lived, said, "Do not let what you cannot do interfere with what you can do." Wooden was known for stressing excellence to his players and encouraging them to work toward their potential. He never made winning a championship his goal. He focused on the journey, not the destination. Yet his work ethic and focus on the things within his control earned his UCLA teams four undefeated seasons, an 88-game winning streak, and 10 national championships. No one had ever done that before him, and no one has done it since.

As you move forward on the success journey, you need to remember that what happens in you is more important that what happens to you. You can control your attitude as your travel on the journey, but you have no control over the actions of others. Unfortunately, the majority of the fear and stress that people experience in life is from things they can do nothing about. Don't let that happen to you. Focus on the things you can do something about today.

Congratulations to the following NAHS students for having their artwork selected for the 2023 National Art Honor Society/National Junior Art Honor Society (NAHS/NJAHS) Juried Exhibition.

NAEA received a record number of 2,410 submissions for the 2023 NAHS/NJAHS Juried Exhibition; 127 artworks have been selected for inclusion. Representatives from Burren College of Art, California College of the Arts, California Institute of the Arts, College for Creative Studies, Delaware College of Art and Design, Maine College of Art and Design, Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design, Minneapolis College of Art and Design, Montserrat College of Art, Moore College of Art and Design, Otis College of Art and Design, Pennsylvania College of Art and Design, Pratt Institute and University of the Arts served as jurors for this exhibition.

Congratulations to Christina Leach (Grade 11) for being one of two winners of the Greenville County Youth Orchestra's Concerto Competition! Christina will perform the 1st movement of the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto at the Peace Center Gunter Theatre on Saturday, May 6 at 7:30 p.m. For tickets, please go to https://www.peacecenter.org/events/detail/gcyo-phil-22.

FAC Visual Arts Instructor Ryan Roth has eight of his paintings on display at Artists Collective - Spartanburg for their latest show "Pushing Pop." The show runs from January 10 through February 25, with the opening reception taking place on January 19 from 5-8 p.m. For more information, visit https://artistscollectivespartanburg.org/pushing-pop/.

The application to attend the Fine Arts Center for the 2023-2024 School Year is now open via the GCS Student Backpack account. All current FAC students must re-apply for next year - please take care of this now so that it does not fall off your radar.

FAC Jazz Studies student Ellie Rogers (Emma Bass) will be the opening act for Edwin McCain at the Peace Center on February 14! Tickets can be purchased at https://www.peacecenter.org/events/detail/edwin-mccain-23.

VSA International Young Soloists Award: Calling all musicians with disabilities, ages 14-25! Each year outstanding young musicians from around the world receive the VSA International Young Soloists Award, $2,000, and the opportunity to participate in professional development and performance opportunities provided by the John F. Naval Reserve Officer Training Corp Scholarship: National Scholarship selectees (Navy, Nurse and Marine Options) must attend and complete New Student Indoctrination during the summer (during July) prior to reporting to their assigned Unit. The Princeton Prize in Race Relations is a non-academic cash prize ($1,000) for high school students who have done work to advance racial equity in their high schools or communities. We select a winner from 29 different regions around the country, and in addition to the cash prize, winners attend an all-expenses-paid symposium on racial justice and advocacy at Princeton University in the spring. James F. Byrnes Foundation - $4500 each year for four years. One or both parents must be deceased, South Carolina resident, pursue a bachelor’s degree, satisfactory academic record, need for financial assistance. www.byrnesscholars.org. Deadline: February 1, 2023

The Wofford Department of Art and Art History is excited to announce the Rosalind Sallenger Richardson Fine Arts Scholarship, which provides for approximately a third of tuition costs over four years. This substantial scholarship is designed both to recognize the work of serious studio artists and to facilitate their continued artistic and academic growth throughout their Wofford careers. Prospective first-year Studio Art majors planning to matriculate in Fall 2023 may apply to receive this scholarship, which can be combined with any other scholarships they may receive. Watson-Brown Foundation - Provides need and merit based scholarships to select Georgia and South Carolina students attending accredited four-year colleges and universities in the United States. The SCAD Challenge 2-D Scholarship Competition is offered to current juniors and seniors in high school. Entrants may use any traditional 2-D medium; digital works are not permitted. Winners will be notified in March. Archibald Rutledge Scholarship Program

The South Carolina Department of Education (SCDE) is announcing the Archibald Rutledge Scholarship Program. This annual program offers public school twelfth-grade students the opportunity to compete for a scholarship worth approximately $2,000 in creative writing, dance, music, theatre, and visual arts. The purpose of the competition is to encourage and recognize academic and artistic excellence. Archibald Rutledge Scholarship Program information is available on the SCDE website. Applications are due February 20, 2023.

Due to the generosity of an anonymous donor, The Vegetarian Resource Group each year will award $30,000 in college scholarship money to graduating U.S. high school students who have promoted vegetarianism in their schools and/or communities. Vegetarians do not eat meat, fish, or fowl. Vegans are vegetarians who do not use other animal products such as dairy or eggs. Silver Pen writing competition is hosted through Cascades Verdae and is open to high school seniors that attend school within a 25 mile radius of the Cascades Verdae. To apply, you must write a 1000 word essay on the assigned topic. silverpen-slc.com Deadline: February 21, 2022
