Believing the coasts of the fledgling United States needed protection from pirates, smuggling, and foreign intrusions, Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton recommended the creation of a "system of cutters." In response, the US Congress passed the legislation forming the Revenue-Marine, the forerunner to the US Coast Guard.

The Tariff Act was officially signed into law by President George Washington at Federal Hall in New York City on August 4, 1790. Alexander Hamilton oversaw its implementation. Today, the Coast Guard is one of the five US armed forces, with a rich history of life-saving missions, guarding US coasts, and providing support during war time.

This August 4th is the 225th anniversary of the creation of the US Coast Guard. To commemorate the occasion, a Coast Guard festival will be held July 31 - August 4th in Brooklyn and Manhattan in New York City. Join the AHA Society, the US Coast Guard, Coast Guard Auxiliary, and the National Park Service for events honoring this special anniversary.

Both the Alexander Hamilton Awareness Society and the US Coast Guard have held several events throughout the year to celebrate the 225th anniversary of the Coast Guard's founding.

January 2015 - US Coast Guard Auxiliary and US Coast Guard Color Band, Sector New York, participated in the graveside remembrance event for Alexander Hamilton's birthday.

June 2015 - US Coast Guard, Sector San Juan and the US Coast Guard Auxiliary participated in the 250th anniversary celebration of Alexander Hamilton's move to Christiansted, St. Croix.

Summer 2015 - Additional events are being hosted in Connecticut, which has declared the summer of 2015 to be "Connecticut's Coast Guard Summer." The state is additionally celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Coast Guard Academy at New London.

Alexander Hamilton is recognized as the "Father of the US Coast Guard," largely for his leadership in the creation of the Revenue-Marine in 1790. The Coast Guard traces its origins back to this original institution charged with protecting US coasts and the national revenue.

Officially established in 1914, the Coast Guard was formed by an aggregation of existing institutions including the Revenue Cutter Service (Revenue-Marine), the Life-Saving Service, Lighthouse Service, and the Bureau of Marine Inspection and Navigation.
